Slings -- Maya v. Moby v. Hotsling

I'm trying to decide between Maya, Moby, and Hotsling slings.  My DH and I will both be using it and we're not tiny people -- 5'11" and 6'3" respectively,  and generally both wear XLs.   Experiences?  Recommendations?

TIA

Re: Slings -- Maya v. Moby v. Hotsling

  • I have a sling, but not the maya or hotsling. My slings are not adjustable. They are sized to me, so DH couldn't use them. I think the Maya at least is adjustable, but I have found that the Moby is the most comfortable. It takes a little getting used to, but it works really well and is one size fits most.

  • I don't have a Maya, but I do have a moby and a hotsling. DD liked the hotsling when she was really little, but now that she's gotten older she doesn't like it as well. The moby overall seems more versatile. The moby will be better for you than the hotsling as far as sizing goes b/c it is meant for all sizes (the hotsling comes in specific size - it is very unlikely you and your DH would be the same size).

I have a hostling and a moby.  DS has never liked the hostling, but I think he may like it more when he is older and can sit up in it with his legs hanging out by my hip.  I love the moby.  It is universal and my DS loves it.  He does not fuss when he is in it at all.

  • It depends on what you want to do with the sling! DS hates cradle carries, so the hotsling seemed kinda pointless to me. I have a Moby and love it for now and use it to carry him chest to chest with me. I'm planning on getting a Maya when DS can sit up, or at least hold his head up a bit better, and will use it as a hip carrier. The Maya and Moby fit almost everyone and are totally adjustable, so I would think you and your hubby can use them both.

I tried the Hotsling and hated it.  It's not adjustable so the sizing is finicky.

I haven't tried the Moby but I have the Maya Ring Sling and love it! (pics in blog!)  The height ranges on the various sizes are pretty wide, so I think you and your DH could both use the same size.

  • We tried the hotsling and it was stupid. LO got all bent in half and I couldn't change his position in it. DH could NEVER get the hotsling on because he's too big, and he's about 6 feet tall with medium build.

Bought the Moby and we LOVE it.... I can get so much done wearing it, and DH likes it too. Many choices for how to wear it. There are a few YouTube videos to learn how to tie it.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who has tried both the Moby and the Maya--I think they are both well-loved and someone generally wouldn't have to try both before finding something they liked.

    This exactly!

However, I am looking forward to DS being a little older and being able to try Hotsling carries other than the cradle with him.  Also, the Moby is still a little funky to use with DS.  He doesn't like the cradle hold any more, and he also hates to have his head held against me like in the newborn hug hold.  I have to put him in the regular hug hold and then support his head a little with my hands.

Something to keep in mind is that the Moby gets really hot.  For the baby, I imagine it's like having a blanket on, and it's almost like having on another heavyweight shirt for the wearer.  Plus both you and your baby get each other's body heat.  I tend to use the Moby inside with the a/c.

This. I HATED the hotsling.. I was super excited about it too and I wound up returning it.. It just never fit right and I bought the correct size for my recommended height/weight.. My baby was very small 5lb 14oz at birth and I felt she got lost inside of it.. I had a horrible time getting her in/out of it.. I just hated the instruction video too for the newborn instructions, they used a doll, now we all know how flimsy babys are compared to plastic dolls.. so useless.

We recently got the Moby (about 1 1/2 wks ago) and I swear by it. LO doesnt last 2 min in it w/o falling asleep and were both comfortable.

A friend of mine has the Maya and she loves it. I have seen it in action and it is much easier than the Moby since you dont have to assemble it before wearing.. (The Moby literally takes 10 seconds to put on but I guess its personal preference.) Both Moby and Maya grow with the baby so its really up to you.

  • I also hate it now... he loved it for two days when he was six pounds then when he got bigger he hated it!
  • I have a Maya wrap and love it!  DS hates the hotsling and peanut but loves the Maya ..

  • The hotsling is fit for your size.  If it fits you it probably won't fit DH.  DS only liked the hotsling a couple times when he was a newborn.  After that he HATED being put in it.  He would have a complete meltdown.  Now that he's older I might try the hip carry, but we have a Bjorn and he likes that.

I'm really upset he didn't like it because I was so excited when I got it for a gift.
