What can your 1.5-2 year old do?

SIL says my 1.5 year old?niece?can count to 10 and speak in full sentences. ? DD has several words....but not a lot. ?Maybe 15-20. ?She'll string 2 words together and can sing, play, etc. ?BUT, she's nowhere near my niece! ?Am I worrying needlessly, or is DD a little behind?

Re: What can your 1.5-2 year old do?

  • your SIL may be stretching the truth!!  I have not met many 18 month olds who can speak in sentences and count etc..

DS is 2 on the 30th.  he has about 12 words, NO 2 word sentences.  can not count, but does understand the order of 1-2-3.  He can put up 2 fingers when you ask how old he is.  and he understand 3-4 step commands.

sing, umm, no.  he is doing more physically.  he figured out how to jump, and can now jump over an object.  he can also hit a ball off a T.  and if you pitch the ball to him, he can swing at the right time and hit it.

    you are worrying needlessly.  :)

  • DD is 2.5 y/o and just started speaking in sentences a few months ago and just learned to count to 10 recently as well. I think that your SIL might be stretching the truth just a bit. I mean, I guess it's possible, but if it is true I hope that her next call is going to be to MENSA.

  • That's a pretty advanced 1.5yo! DD just turned 2 & is starting to string more than 3 words together, sings, can count to 20 & sing ABC's with help, jumps, over 100 words, uses a cup pretty well & silverware.

  • When it comes to language kids can be very very different.  My older DD was using 4 to 5 word sentences at 18 months.  She could sing her ABC's and count to ten.  It doesn't mean she's smarter than any other kid.  She's just very vocal and has been a talker since day one.  My second DD is 15 months and only has a handful of words.  Every kid does it differently and I wouldn't worry about it too much.  A good rule of thumb is that they should be using single words while they are one and by two they should be starting to use two word phrases.  But even that is not set in stone!
  • I wanted to add that I think second kids talk later than their older peers.  I'm sure there are people who will disagree but with the families I worked with (I was an EI teacher) I saw it a lot.  Even with my girls I notice that DD #1 does a lot of talking for DD #2.  And it is impossible to read books and ask questions with DD #2 without DD #1 chiming in first!
  • DD is 21 months. She cannot count (although she recognizes what a number is, she'll say 2 or 4). She's learning her ABC's. She knows most of her colors (but sometimes will get confused and say red for pink). She says basic 3 word sentences (It's a dog. That's a bath. It's a car. Etc.). DD doesn't sing though...she's a dancer. :-) At 18 months she had 15-20 words. Her vocabulary has increased dramatically in the past 2 months. I have lost count on her words. It's hard to understand her at times, but we know what she's saying. Give your daughter a little more time before you start to worry.
  • Nathan's kind of hit a stand still at new words. ? He has at least 30-40 words. He does combine "all done" and "bye bye daddy." ? Possibly a few other combos.

We count to three a lot but his comes out "un, oo, eee." ?He can point to most body parts and can say most articles of clothing. ? No colors. ?

  • I don't think your DD is behind at all! Every child is different. Vocabulary is the area where my DD excels the most.

Madelyn will be 2 in July. She as a vocabulary of 200-250 words and says sentences like "Need more crackers, please, Mommy." She can spell her name (Maddy) and CAN count to 10 in both English and Spanish but usually refuses to do it.

  • Your DD sounds just fine!  There is such a wide range of normal.  Some people do 'stretch the truth' about their kids, and if she is trying to do the competition thing then maybe so.  But while it's unusual, it's not out of the question.  My DD who is just turning 2 this month has been speaking in full sentences for months now & can count to 15, sing her ABC's and a bunch of other songs all the way through.  But mine has an older sister who has made it her sole purpose in life to teach her little sis!  I think you are worrying needlessly- fwiw, my bf's kids were behind in speech and your DD has many more words than they had at her age.

I have no idea how many words are in DD's vocab now, at 18mo it was over 75 and I've stopped counting. She'll be 2 in 2 weeks, but for about a month she's been using longer and longer sentences. She says sentences like the one quoted above. Yesterday she told me, "I need lunch, mama! I want sandwich please."

At 18mo though it was was mostly 2 word phrases, but she said her frist 3-word sentence right before her 18mo dr appt. And at that age she could hum/sing/babble to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle and several other songs.

She can count to 7 correctly on a regular basis.

But she started talking long before she could even crawl... because she didn't start crawling until 11.5mo! And didn't walk until 14.5mo. She tries to jump all the time, but she's only actually done it once or twice. She's just very vocal and not very physically-inclined. Which honestly makes perfect sense coming from me and DH.

Oh, and none of the other kids in DD's class talk nearly as much as she does, so I don't think your DD is behind at all. Kids just develop differently. For example, my nephew at 2 still only had a few words. A few months later he just busted out with sentences and tons of words that he had never said before. Apparently he was just absorbing it all and finally decided it was time to talk... and at 2.5 his favorite phrase is "I farted out my heiny-hole!" Tongue Tied Which is something my BIL had said jokingly a few times MONTHS before nephew started talking so be careful!
