We started finger foods around 9 months. Now, at almost 11, he's getting pretty good at it. Took awhile!?
Cheese is his favorite. Also loves yogurt melts but I don't give him many at a time. Cheerios are a hit (we use wheat-free Trader Joe's O's), and he also likes fresh steamed green and wax beans and sweet potato sticks (also TJ's). If we're having pancakes, we'll cut one small for him. Same with whatever fresh fruit we have that week--banana, mango, pear, apple... After 9 months we were told to just start feeding him from our plates, so we give him what we eat as much as possible. He still gets quite a few purees though.
I have just started them, and we're going very very slowly. I give him a few puffs before meals, and I'll sometimes give him a bite of my food, like a little piece of apple or something. We also just got a mesh feeder which he loves.
Right now I'm just letting him get used to chewing and myself get used to freaking out that he might choke I think at around 8 months I'll probably start getting more serious about finger foods.
I started around 7 months. DS started with cheerios and puffs. Now he eats pieces of banana, pear, peaches, cheese, veggie burger, turkey meatloaf, yogurt melts, pancakes, and pasta. He is getting much better at getting things in his mouth.
