Car seat/Travel system question

Just verifying and a question... So the travel systems have the car seat/carrier that fits into stroller and then can be taken out to move to the car seat so as not to wake up baby OR the other option is a seperate car seat with a stroller?

Also, after baby outgrows the 22lb car seat whats the next step up?

Re: Car seat/Travel system question

  • We purchased an infant car seat that goes up to 32 lbs.  (graco snugrider 32)  We are not purchasing the big travel system because imo it's just too bulky and heavy for what we are using it for.  We have decided to go with the infant car seat and then a lightweight stroller frame that the carseat just snaps into.  Lots of people do however purchase the travel system and really like them.  It's just personal preference.  If you purchase the travel system you can continue to use the stroller and just purchase a convertible car seat after baby reaches the weight limit on the infant car seat.  If you choose to go the route we did, we will keep her in her infant car seat until she reaches 32 lbs or the height limit and at that time purchase the convertible car seat.  When she is big enough for a lightweight umbrella type stroller we will get one of those also.  I think price wise it probably evens out in the end.

We did get the travel system so that way we won't have to wake the baby if she is sleeping in her car seat.  As for the stroller I figured for vacations and day trips like the zoo that a big stroller would be more accomodating and easier to use than a smaller stroller umbrella stroller.

As for the car seat, the next step up is a convertable seat.  We registered for the Britax roundabout for my car and the britax marathon for DH's car.

  • We have the Graco MetroLite travel system. Technically, it's not a travel system, because the pattern we wanted didn't come as a set, but we bought the car seat and the MetroLite in the same pattern, and they work together. We'll also have the smaller snap frame for quick trips.

The car seat we have goes up to 32lbs. Then we'll buy a convertible seat that can work as a booster as the child grows.

Our stroller goes up to 40lbs. I figure once the kiddo is getting heavier, I won't want to lug the car seat in and out all the time, I can just take the baby out and put her in the stroller. The one we have has an adjustable incline, including fully reclined, so we can also use it without the carseat attached fairly early on.

  • Here's what we did with DD. We got a snugride infant seat. We got the lightest one available. I think the seat itself was 7lbs. Once DD hit about 15-16 lbs it got REALLY heavy to lug her around. There is NO WAY I could have lifted a 32lb baby plus a 10lbs infant seat. We got the snap-n-go stroller frame -- you just snap the infant seat right in and off you go. It was super easy, lightweight and simple to fold/unfold.

Once she outgrew the infant seat, we moved her to a Britax Marathon convertible seat. She hated her infant seat so we did this fairly early -- around 5 months or so. She'll use this until she's 3 or 4 or something. And now we have a maclaren stroller that is also super easy, lightweight and practical. I LOVE it!?

I was so clueless about all this stuff when I was registering and I am SO happy with what we ended up getting! GL!?

We didn't do the travel system but yes what you are saying is correct. THe travel system comes with the stroller, carseat, base. The carseat snaps into the stroller. You can definitely do the carseat and stroller separately. Most strollers will fit graco carseats. We got the bumbleride flyer as a gift from my mom and then we purchased the chicco carseat. It snaps into the flyer just like a travel system.

After the baby out grows the carseat either b/c of weight or height you go to a convertible seat like the Britax carseats.

  • Yes, you're right about the travel system. Also just so you know they do have car seats that go up to 32 pounds. This was a must for us.
