D.C. Area Babies

Kensington area

Does anyone have any input on this area? My husband & I are looking at houses and I saw this was not far from his job. We've been looking in Potomac & Bethesda....Would love some insight!

 TIA!

Re: Kensington area

  • I'm not totally familiar with Kensingon, but I believe it is quite a nice place to live since it is near Chevy Chase.  I would say it is comparable to Bethesda and Potomac.

  • It's a bit more reasonable in housing prices. Like everywhere else, it has it's nice areas and "ok" areas. The areas closer to Chevy Chase are nice but the areas closer to Silver Spring are more on the "ok" side. I would not compare it to Bethesda or Potomac. I'd compare it more to Rockville or Silver Spring.?
  • are you on the nest? you might want to post this on the DC nest board. there are a couple of nesties that live in kensington, myself included.

we bought here about 3.5 years ago, and like the area. we lived in DC before in a couple neighborhoods while we rented, and then rented in Bethesda for a bit. kensington is really close to so much stuff (rockville, bethesda, silver spring) while still being affordable for single family homes and you're not far from the dc line. it's safe. schools vary in decency depending on where you are. we live in part of kensington that borders wheaton and feel quite safe walking around late at night with the dog.

I used to live there and have worked in Potomac for 10 years so I know that area really well.
  • We live in Wheaton not too far from Kensington.

There are some neighborhoods in Kensington that are just SO cute...

I think, depending on exact location, it is a great place to live.

  • I live in Rockville near Kensington in a cute little neighborhood with houses built in the 1950's. At first, I did NOT want to move to Rockville (I was a Virginia girl) but my husband already owned a house here so it made sense for me to move up here when we got married. Now I LOVE it. Here's what I love about our particular neighborhood:

    1. We live 2 blocks from Rock Creek Park which has paved trails and plenty of park areas for kids. When it's warm, we do 5 mile walks a few times a week. We also bike a lot and we can go 6 miles north to a lake or 9 miles south. It's a free activity and great for our relationship (and we will enjoy the parks with our little girl when she comes).

    2. I live 2 miles from the Rockville Pike/Montrose Road intersection. While it's a high conjestion area, EVERY shop that I need is there (Bed Bath and Beyond, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Best Buy, Michaels, G-Street Fabric, World Market, White Flint Mall, the list goes on and on). So, I can do all of my shopping within 3 miles of my house.

    3. We are 1.5 miles from the White Flint Metro - so anytime we want to go into DC, we can easily hop on the metro.

    4. The houses are very affordable. They are older but well built. We also have a nice yard with a lot of mature trees so we have a lot of privacy.
