How long did the crying last with Ferber? DH needs to know!

He's in agreement with me that we need to do it, but he said he can't stand to listen to her forever (like I can! I was crying myself!). Anyway, he asked what the cutoff would be, if she'll be in there crying for 3-4 hours. I told him that there's no way she would go on for that long, but that I would consult my nesperts to see how their kiddos did.

So how long did the crying go on and how many nights did it totally suck?

  • firs night took about an hour- every night after it was about 15 minutes or less.  He cries for about 30 seconds now.

    This. :-)

  • Usually less than 1/2 hour. Always less than 1. After about 3 nights it gets MUCH MUCH better, and usually you are good to go after no more than 7 nights.

Good luck. You just have to stick to it and don't give in and go in and pick her up.

  • The first night was the worst. It took 50 minutes of crying before she fell asleep - then an hour when she woke up in the middle of the night.( I had to go downstairs and my DH went in)  We started about a week ago and since then it has only been a few minutes to go to sleep and she is STTN. Good luck.
  • DD cried 3 nights.  The longest length of time she cried was an hour.

I've seen your other posts about DD getting mad on the checks, mine did too.  I ended up spacing the checks out further when I could hear the crying waning, and the last thing I wanted to do was to get her going again.  To be more specific, I did the early checks very close together so she knew I was there (2, around 8-10 minutes apart, on the second she would become very upset) and then spaced out the other to 20-30 minutes, because her crying would decrease at around 12 minutes, and she would pretty much stop in the next 15 minutes.  The reality is that the last check was me checking when she was asleep.

  • I see on your ticker that your LO is past the 1 year mark. So brace yourself as she may have more stamina than she would have had as a baby. Create a cozy atmosphere for her. My nine-month old for example sleeps like a big girl with her Teddy. It is most likely not going to take more than an hour...and keep in mind every time you go in to calm her down your clock starts over- that's at least how it was with DD...weak sucker that I am...I think the first night it took hours...until I finally set a timer and told myself that I would not go in until the 10 minutes were actually up...well she was asleep after 7 minutes...and we haven't had many battles since...

    Good Luck to you!
