Here's why our healthcare system sucks...

Dh is passing a very painful kidney stone right now...well, trying to pass.  He refuses to go to the dr because we know our insurance won't cover it.  We had to switch from a group plan to an individual plan and they are excluding his kidney issues from coverage for two years.

And if we take him in today, the 2 year exclusion starts over from today's date.

Nice, huh?

  • That's really awful!  I'm so sorry!  I hope he feels better soon!  I hate the healthcare system in this country.  We have decent (not great) coverage and the premium alone costs us over 10% of our gross income for the year and involves a lot of copays and deductibles after paying the premium.

  • OMG, I've had kidney stones and can't imagine passing one without any pain meds.  I hope he feels better soon...
  • That's horrible!  I hate our healthcare system.  I don't think that healthcare should be a privilege.

  • I want to chime in my hatred for our healthcare "system" too!

  • It isn't the healthcare system that you all are pissed off at, it is the insurance companies.

FWIW, I passed a minimum of 5 stones in the bathroom of the waiting room in the ER waiting for a room to come available.  I had no pain meds and I drank about 5 liters of water over the course of 3 hours to get them out.  We were there for a total of 4 hours waiting to be seen and I passed them all before I got to go back.  That was a fun night.

Have him drink lots of beer.  It helps dull the pain and the fluid will help him pass them.  At least that is what my specialist told me for my follow-up.

I hope he passes it soon.

  • that sounds like some craptastic plan! yikes.

i trulyl feel for your Dh... i have had kidney stones and given birth within days of each other- and can honestly say- giving birth was less painful.

hope he is able to pass it soon.... but if it's not happening he should see a doc no matter what b/c if it starts to back up urine into his kidney it can get really dangerous.
