cleaning DC's toys

What do you use to do this?  DD is putting EVERYTHING in her mouth so I figure I better start being a little more vigilant about cleaning her toys.  Some are plastic, some are cloth and some are both!  For the plastic, I've just been using Ivory dish detergent and water.  I really am not a big fan of bleach...usually most of it ends up on me and I've had to toss one too many items of clothing that way.  Is there a more natural cleanser/disinfectant?  How often do you clean your DC's toys?  Thanks!!

Re: cleaning DC's toys

  • I clean the plastic ones with the dishes, just like you're describing. If they're completely soft, like her cloth dolls or taggies ball, I throw them in the wash. I have used Method wipes on some of them, but I prefer to just wash them with dish soap. They do sell "Babyganics" brand cleaning supplies that are supposed to be safe for babies.

  • I like Clorox Anywhere hard surface cleaner for disinfecting hard plastic toys.  They use it in day care centers and doctors offices etc, so I feel pretty safe using it.  I do that weekly.  I throw soft toys into a pillow case, knot the end,  and wash them with her laundry.

I've used Clorox wipes for some things too, and washed others with the dishes.  For some toys, I'll put them in the dishwasher if it's something he puts in his mouth all. the. time.  (and they can go through the dishwasher)
  • For plastic toys, like rings & such, I wash them with the bottles, then sterilize them.

For plastic toys that have non-microwavable parts (metal screws, play music, etc), I wash them with the bottles.

For larger plastic toys (jumper, walker, etc), I wipe them down with Lysol or Clorox wipes.

Stuffed animals and the like I rotate in the freezer. I read somewhere that this kills some of the germs, and 99% of the dust mites. The ones she plays with all the time I put in the laundry maybe once a month or so. More if it's gotten icky.
