XP: Best hospital to have a baby?

Hi, ladies.  I saw a couple of similar posts below, but I wanted to get a little more specific with my question.

I'm considering changing my OB/GYN because DH & I are thinking next year we'll start trying to get pregnant. I'm currently at OHSU, and I like it there (although maybe a tad too big). I live near Good Sam, so I was thinking that would be a great place to have the baby, but I don't know anything about the birthing, maternity ward, or physicians.

Anyone have any thoughts on the best hospital to have a baby in Portland? My top 3 are OHSU, Good Sam, and Emanuel. I prefer a female physician. Any suggestions?

TIA for all your thoughts!

  • Steelers Fans!!  Woot!

Well, I had my baby at Kaiser Sunnyside and had a great experience, great Dr's and nurses, etc...

My Mom had me and my brother at OHSU (27 and 23 years ago, of course) and liked it, but told me that her only complaint was that because it's a training hospital, that alot of students were in and out of her room during labor, and she "felt like a lab rat being watched"... I don't know if it's still like that though.

My friend Nicole and another Nestie that I know, both had their babies at Emanuel, an I haven't heard anything bad from them.

    Good luck in your search!

  • I am planning on delivering at Good Sam. I work there and it is a really clean nice hospital. Their maternity ward is very nice. Co-workers of mine have delivered there and have all had good experiences. My OBGYN is Leslie Hulton and so far I really like her. She spent alot of time with me at me first visit, she seems very thourough. She was also one of Portland Monthly's top OBGYN's.  I too wanted a woman and I like the fact that all of the other doctors in her office are women also.
  • For a great female physician, Women's Clinic has Lisa Johnson, MD, who was actually voted one of the best OB/Gyn's in Portland Magazine.  My (male) doc is in the same practice with her so I've seen her a few times and loved her.  I recommended her to a friend who wanted a female doc & she also really, really likes her. She's younger (probably late 30's) & very cool.  That clinic delivers at Providence Portland & Emanuel, I believe. I've given birth at Prov PDX and had a fantastic experience.
  • Ilovemygirls...who's your dr. by chance? My former OBGYN was in the same office, I adored him. But I moved too far away and knew I couldn't drive from Newberg to Emanuel every week come 9 months along. He diagnosed my stage 4 endometreosis and also put me on the Clomid that I eventually concieved my daughter on. I miss him, just wondering if he's yours!

I personally had my daughter at Providence Newberg, but have had a few friends who have had their babies at Good Sam and I have heard nothing but praises from them.  Great staff, pretty rooms, etc.

  • My OB is Dr. Maxine Bauer at Women's Health Today (Providence Portland Building next to the Hospital).  I can't say enough about her or the practice.  They have you meet with all the doctors/mid-wives during your office visits just in case she's not on-call if you go into labor at an odd hour, etc.  That way, at least you're not working with a stranger come D-day.  I went into labor 6 weeks early so I had to be transported out to St. Vincents where they have the state of art NICU facility.  Dr. David Abel was my doctor there.  He's from the Women's Clinic across the street/parking lot from St. Vincent Hospital.  He's a high-risk doctor and had coincedentally been involved with my screenings during my pregnancy (Amnio, NTS).  I'm over 35, so they sent me there for my screenings).  I was bummed I couldn't have Dr Bauer deliver Alexa, but Dr. Abel was amazing.  He is a fantastic doctor and has a great personality.  He speaks to you like you're a person, not above your head with dr. speak.  The nurse out there kept telling me I was going to have a c-section and that I should have a c-section, but Dr. Abel was very calm (dd's heartrate kept dropping with some contractions) and said he'd do everything to avoid a c-section.  In the end, he was correct and I had her vaginally, but he did let me know how quickly they could get me prepped for the other procedure should I need it.  I very much appreciated him for all of that.  Anyway, the Providence Hospital system is great and those doctors and clinics were fabulous.
  • Thanks, ladies/mommies!  I'm calling some of these doc's today to ask some specific questions & make my appt!
  • I have nothing productive to add to this post because I'm in the same boat as you ... BUT I was born at Emanuel and my mom had absolutely no complaints. That was, of course, 23 years ago ... so take it as you may. :)

Prescott.  Love him.  I don't live in PDX anymore either but now that I'm done having kids I figure I can still drive once a year to see him!  There was one of the other male docs that saw me for discharge from the hospital who was soooo nice- I can't remember his name though. Who was yours?

  • Dr. Hamilton. Tall guy, kinda half balding. Sweetest face. I miss him so much, he got me pregnant and diagnosed my stage 4 endo. I was sad to have moved so far away. I think I might do the same as you when I'm done having kids. I'll need a hyst. any might have him do it. His bedside manor is so great!
