Anyone quit to SAH while on FMLA leave?

Did you give two weeks notice (resign two weeks before your last day) while on leave or did you resign when your FMLA leave was up?  I'm on leave now and I've got 3 weeks left on FMLA.  I've decided to SAH but not sure when to give notice.  Would love to hear your experience on this.  Thanks!

You should probably check with HR to make sure you don't lose your benefits or have to pay back money if you were on STD.

Personally, I was using my sick leave and vacation time in conjunction with FMLA during my leave.  I gave my 2 weeks notice a week before my leave was up and then I worked a week to clean out my office and tie up loose ends.

  • I'm sorry I can't answer this for you as I'm struggling with this myself. I'm 80% sure that I want to SAHM but DH just started a new job and I'm not comfortable putting in my leave and quitting at the end of July when FMLA will take me to the end of October and give us a little more time to make sure we can make it work w/ just DH's income. Also, I think it is really hard to make this kind of a big decision when you have never been in this position before.

    I did the same thing.

I waited until the unpaid leave started and then I gave my notice. If wait until the end of the unpaid leave they may ask you to  pay back the insurance premiums that they paid on your behalf when you were on the unpaid leave.

Just ask your HR person all the hypatheticals- what if I come back early, what if I need COBRA while on unpaid leave, what if I decide not to come back....see what they say.

  • I gave 2 weeks notice on my scheduled return date. I was in sales so they accepted my notice but did not make me work the 2 weeks. I would wait until your scheduled return date and then go in and resign/give 2 weeks notice in person.

I didn't take fmla, but I was due back from my std on the 19th of this month. I told my boss this last tuesday I decided to stay home. She's still paying me for the rest of my std, woo!

  • Thanks for your responses ladies!  Definitely a tough decision and I don't know why but I feel guilty for leaving.  Although I'm sure it's the best decision for us!

I did the same thing except I was teaching. I contacted HR and told them I wanted to extend my leave to long term. Technically, I can return by Sept but I'm not going to.

  • I tried, LOL.  I was on disability before though (massage therapist with monster back and wrist pain at 27 weeks, causing contractions) and thank God for STD!  When I told them near the end that I wouldn't be coming back they said they needed me and convinced me to agree to an on call as necessary position (I was the department lead before).  I agreed and ended up working only 4 days in 4 months, at my choice.  But hey, I got to keep my spa discount and a smaller hole in my resume so who got hurt?
