Babies: 9 - 12 Months

stupid question about being done nursing

I should have been paying attention when people asked but since it didn't apply yet, I didn't.  I've done so much reading on how to keep going...haven't done anything on how to stop.  So when you're done nursing...do you just stop everything cold turkey?

I'm kinda thinking all the meds I'm on will dry up the milk and I won't have to worry about engorgment or whatever.  But just curious what you do.

I'm off to google but thought I'd ask others I 'know' for tips, advice and such.

Re: stupid question about being done nursing

  • I just cut out 1 feeding at a time and offered a bottle at that time...but my supply was doo doo anyways. The morning feeding was the last to go, but I didn't have engorgment.

  • I slowly weaned by introducing whole milk and doing the "don't offer/don't refuse" method.  He started only nursing morning/night and actually dropped the night feeding first because I had DH put him to bed.  Then one day - no nursing!  I did get clogged ducts about 2 weeks later, so don't be alarmed by that!
  • I weaned over a months time. It was the best thing ever and it truly worked out so well for me. I went from pumping every 3 hours for 4 days to every 4 hours for 4 days to every 6 hours for 4 days to every 8 hours for 4 days to every 10 hours for 4 days to every 12 hours for 4 days. at that point I did 2 days of just once a day and then stopped. Good luck!
  • I was down to 1 feeding at bedtime and stopped cold turkey (I got some 24 hours puking virus and DH had to do bedtime). I had no engorgment or anything, but my supply had been iffy for a few months. GL Southern!!

  • Glad to read this as I am in the same boat.  I had been pumping nursing in the morning, pumping 3 times a day at work, nursed at bed, and pumped one more time before I went to bed.  Over the last few days, I pump only twice at work and cut out the last pump session before bed.  Plan to work towards only pumping once at work and then to none.

This is very hard though!  I haven't read anything else or done serious planning so any information would be helpful for me as well!  Thanks

  • I stopped cold turkey.  I'm not sure it was the greatest idea, but I lived through it.  I wore super-tight sports bras and used cabbage leaves in them.  It took about 2-3 weeks; only the first 3 days were bad.
  • I agree w/ PP, but I ep'ed so I just put more time between pumping sessions.  Could you exclusively bottle feed DD and then pump when you feel engorged?  Then you could make the time of each session less and less.  It took me about a month to quit.  It has been a month now and I still have milk, but I dont' have to pump
  • maybe I'm going to be in good shape then.  At 9 months we dropped her afternoon nursing. At 10 months we dropped her late morning nursing...leaving us with just morning and night.  Hopefully since we've done all that and with the meds it won't be too bad.

    Thanks girls!!

  • In addition to dropping pumping/nursing sessions, I took Sudafed to dry up faster and Lecithin to keep from getting clogged ducts.  I was totally done in less than 2wks.
