Baby Signs

Any of you guys teaching your little one's signing? If so- how did you start?

Robbie's 8 1/2 months adj.. That's old enough, right?

Did you use a DVD? Take a class?

If you used  DVD, which one?

Re: Baby Signs

  • As soon as a baby has the fine motor skills and the basic concept of communication - you can start teaching sign.

I would start with one sign at a time until he starts to get it.   If you go to my blog I've done some posts about signs (basic concept and specifics). It should give you a jumping off point.

I know some people who have had luck with sign language DVDs and others that haven't. It's kind of a toss up.

Start slow and see how he does with it.  Do you have an OT? Many of them can work on sign as well.

Olivia really took to it and it really helped her not only communicate with us but also helped her understand what it meant to communicate.  Her language really took off after she started signing.

  • Thanks PP.. I'll check out your blog! Yes, we do have an OT. I didn't think to ask her. She was just here today, too. I'll try to remember for next week!

  • Drake is learning sign language and probably knows somewhere around 50 or so now - I lost track!

Try these sites if you want to teach American Sign Language

We don't know how long Drake will need sign language so we are teaching the real thing rather than the baby videos -- don't get me wrong, those are great but we thought we might as well teach him ASL so he can have the skill!  :)

  • We bought the Baby Signing Time DVD, because we are clueless about signing. Not only did we not know how to sign, but we didn't know which signs would be helpful for the guys to know. We bought the DVD to teach us how to sign, so we could work on signs with them throughout the day.

We lost momentum after they learned to sign "more" and one of them learned how to say "eat", and we stopped working on new signs with them.

HOWEVER, the DVD is really great and if we had more time in the day we would definitely be working on other signs with them. It is SO nice that they are able to tell us when they are hungry, when they want more, and when they are done (they say "done-done", since some time last week).

I should pop that DVD in and pick a new sign or 2 to teach them over the next few days. hmmmmm.

We started around that age, but all we ever worked on was more, all done and eat (pretty obvious what is important around here, huh?). Emma doesn't seem that into it, so I haven't really focused on it which probably isn't the best reaction, but oh well :)

I just looked the signs up online, we didn't use a book or video :)

  • We are teaching Ray San.  So far, all we have done is the sign for milk.  We just keep signing and saying the word before each feeding.  He definitely knows it, but he can't quite do it himself yet.

We have a couple of book as well as the Baby Einstein DVD.  One thing I was told was that it might not look exactly like what you learn.  Each baby adapts it to make it their own.

Here is one of the books we have:

  • We did it starting at about a year.  I know people who started before 6 months.

I completely regret it, Addie is way behind in talking, and I know I did it right.  She is just now stopping doing the signs and saying the words, but sometimes she still does them when we ask her things.  We ALWAYS said the word with the sign, and she just didn't catch on. If they are on par with language, I am sure it is fine, but it has been a major battle for us. I am sure she would have talked late regardless, but I do believe this set us back a little.  And I have read in many places that kids who are learning more than one language talk later, and that includes sign.
