CONCORD, N.H.?New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch says he will sign a bill to make his state the sixth to legalize gay marriage, but only if it's changed to give churches and people affiliated with them more protections.DiscussCOMMENTS (18)As passed, the bill would allow churches to decide whether they will conduct religious marriages for same-sex couples. But Lynch said Thursday he wants clearer language to ensure that people won't be forced to violate their religious principles. He says laws in Connecticut and Vermont do that. The bill's main sponsor -- state Rep. Jim Splaine -- says the bottom line is that Lynch supports marriage equality for gays. The only other New England state not committed to recognizing same-sex marriage is Rhode Island. Iowa is the other state to legalize gay marriage.
so the bill didn't automatically pass into law on the fifth day? or did he end up sending it back?
i believe what happened is that it hasn't made it to his desk yet. it needed signatures from the speaker of the house, etc, so even though they passed it to send to him, it still hasn't officially reached him. that's my understanding at least.

I get that churches are worried about being "forced" to marry people they don't want to, but why do states still empower religious organizations to oversee state business? Just make everyone get legally married at the county recorders office and whoever wants to can have any type of extra ceremony they wish.

Well even when you have a religious ceremony, you still need to get your marriage license through the city clerk (government).
But YES, thank you. It is called separation of church state. Religion has nothing to do with our equal rights under the law.
