I have not had any supply issues this time around, however the last couple of days I have been sick and DS has not been eating well... so I haven't had the energy to pump when he doesn't nurse well. So today when I was pumping at work I noticed a definate difference in the amount that I am able to pump and DS doesn't seem satisfied after nursing tonight. So now I am worried that my milk is starting to dry up... does it really happen that quickly? And does anyone have suggestions of how to reverse the damage I did to my supply while being sick??
Please help, I really want to keep BFing as long as possible! I also work fulltime.
Re: I need BFing Advice Too!!
Breastfeeding is a supply and demand thing. I would pump in between feedings to get your supply up or just have LO nurse more. I had some bug when I nursed my son and the supply was low for a short time, but it comes back. I nursed him exclusively for a yr. Drink plenty of fluids and if you can eat well. I have heard somewhere along the line oatmeal helps so I eat that a lot. You should not dry up right away.

I had my appendix removed in emergency surgery when DD was 3 weeks. My milk supply dipped big time and it took about a week to get it back. Spend lots of time having skin-to-skin contact with your baby and drink tons and tons of water.
GL! And most of all, don't stress about it, because that WILL affect your supply as well.
Are you drinking enough? Since you're sick, you should be drinking even more than normal, so it could be dehydration. I got sick and wasn't drinking enough and noticed a significant drop in my supply. When I started drinking more, I noticed a huge difference. Try that and see what happens.
Just keep pumping and nursing. Your supply will get back up. I had supply issues when dd was a baby but I stuck with it. I suggest the following:
1) Drink a TON of water, especially before pumping. Drink 1 full glass of water before every pumping or nursing session and at least 8 glasses of water per day.
2) Try increasing your calories for a couple of days (this works wonders for producing milk!)
3) Eat oatmeal for breakfast for a few days----not the instant kind but the old fashioned kind. Not sure why but this helps a lot, too. My lactation consultant told me about this one.
I had the stomach flu for 3 days when my ds was born a few mos. ago. I was unable to nurse him for those 3 days and had to give him formula. Once I got better I had supply issues. By following the above, I had my supply back up within 3 days.
