I want an epidural, but it still freaks me out

I have a very low pain tolerance, so I know I want an epidural...but watching the video at childbirth class the other night and all the risks (although they're a low percentage) still freaked me out. Anyone else feeling this way?

  • The only part you feel is the initial local numbing shot! Compared to contrax, it's really nothing! I was freaked out about getting one too and it was nothing.
  • Epis freaked me out when I was pregnant with DD.  It motivated me to convince myself I would not need one and I would be able to handle the pain.  Then I went into labor and remembered I have no tolerance for pain.  I was still nervous about the epi when I asked for it, but once it was started and over I was so glad I did it.

  • It freaked me out too. I had one with my first. I did have a sore spot on my back for about 2 weeks but other than that I didn't have any issues with it. I was able to push without a problem and I was able to move my legs some.

That being said I had an unmedicated birth with my second and that is what I am going to shoot for again this time around. But the idea of an epidural doesn't scare me like it did.

  • Trust me, by the time you are in enough pain to ask for one you won't care. :)
  • That idea of getting the epi freaks me out.  With my first child I went all natural but that was only I stuck the pain out way to long at home before heading to the hospital.  By the time I got there I wanted one but was to far along to get it.  This time I plan on getting on but don't like the idea of them sticking me with a needle.
  • Im not going to lie, I'm scared of it!!!!!!!  But I know I want one because I don't like pain at all
  • I was the same way! I HATE getting blood drawn, an IV, shots etc. I was hoping not to want one but I did. I was terrified. I was so out of it, that I remember asking 'did you do it yet?' and he was done. It was seriously the easiest/least painful thing done that day, in my experience. (Comparing to an IV in each arm, having a catheter put in and my water broke, all before epi)
