Anyone not getting a pack and play?

I'm toying with the idea of forgoing the pack and play.

We live in a ranch, our bedroom is right next to the nursery. If we did have the pack and play in our room, it would save us literally four steps.

We were gifted a used crib that we're giving to my parents to have for when we visit. DH's parents live in Spain, so we won't be hauling it there.

I figure if we decide we need one for travel down the road, we can pick up a cheap one or find one on craigslist, but as of now, I think we'll be ok without one.

What do you think?

Re: Anyone not getting a pack and play?

  • Do you do a lot of picnicking in the summer, reunions, sporting events, etc?  They come in handy there, especially when they start crawling and don't always like to be held.  Nice for taking naps.

If you don't think you'll need one, don't get one...you can pick them up for $60 if you need to at a local department store if something comes up.

  • If you don't need it, then forget it! I decided not to get a bassinet. I was in the "got to have it" mode for a while, but came to my senses when I realized we really didn't need it. Looks like if you did travel just buy a cheap one!

  • Yeah, we're lame, we don't do any of those things.
  • Personally, I used it a lot more when they were toddlers than I did when they were infants. Just to get them to play in one spot while I cooked or cleaned.

We got one because we plan to travel when DS is 5-6 weeks old, and we want him to be used to sleeping in his PNP.  (We're not getting a bassinet.)  Also, I anticipate going to my parent's house every so often overnight, and I've heard babies sleep better when they are used to whatever they are sleeping in.

If you don't think you'll use/need it right away, I'm sure you could find a nice used one on craiglist or at a garage sale.  :)  Saving money is always a good thing!

  • We had one to keep downstairs to use as a changing area for the baby, and a place to put her when she was older. Hardly used the bassinet portion except for storage of changing supplies. We got a basic one to keep at my mom's when she's there. I don't even think we're going to use ours for #2 b/c I got a changing table with storage when DD outgrew the changing portion of the PnP.
  • Honestly, I wish we wouldn't have bought one. We got one for DS and set it up in our room. I got the one with the works, changing table, bassinet, vibrator, music, light show......not kidding. It's the lime green Combi one. It's the biggest pain in the rear though......we seriouslyalmost get divorced every time we put it up and down.

We put it in our bedroom when he was first born, he slept in the bassinet part for about two days. After that it was only used for a changing table. This time we're putting it in the family room, just so my mom can use the changing table in the family room while DS is playing/eating/watching tv, etc. (my mom watches my kids during the day). Oh, and in the family room, I usually just let DS sleep in the bouncer or swing, so I never needed it for that reason. And by the time he got big enough to play on his own and need "contained" I would just put him in his exercauser. He was fine playing in that until he could walk......and by then he had no interest staying in a pack n' play and just playing with his toys.

  • I got one way later for her to play in when I had to work in the garage or something. I think we've used it 12 times, it's been nice to take to hotels if you travel a lot because the hotel ones SUCK.

I think it's the best one around, it's?square?and big enough to play in and also fine for sleeping. It has a mirror in it too.?

?I think we will use it more with #2, maybe. We have a ranch as well, 1700 sqft, and next to our bed is a basinette which we used with DD and worked great. Later I'll use the twin bed in the babies room like I did with DD when needed for bad nights and co-sleeping. I was never big into pack-n-plays personally. With a two story or big house I can see it being useful but I don't think it seems super comfy to sleep on all the time.?

  • With dd we didnt do a bassinet or pnp. we live in a ranch style home as well so it wasnt necessary. once she got old enough to crawl she hated to be confined to one area.
  • My nephew didn't have one, they were in a ranch as well, and it don't think it was ever missed. We bought one because we have mulitple levels in our home and crib is upstairs and we spend most of our spare time in the lower level so the Pn'P will stay down there. We also go OOT a lot so it will come in handy for us to bring with. For your needs it sounds like you could do without.

  • We didn't get one.  So far we haven't missed it.
  • We are in a similar situation and we aren't buying one. I just don't see the point. I guess we will see what happens. If we end up needing one we can always buy one later.
  • Thank you all for answering. I think we're going to wait until we need it.
  • Were not getting one either.  We don't have room in the house for one and never used one years ago for my dd.  We have a bassinet for the baby to sleep in plus the living room is only a few steps away from the babies room.
