Please Please I need your opinion

DD is 8 months actual 6 months adjusted. She didn't qualify for EI or any follow up. Physically she isn't really to far delayed, but I'm getting worried about speech. She doesn't babble at all. She cooed when she was a few months old and then she discovered she can squeal and now that's all she does. She doesn't even make vowel sounds anymore. She squeals and fake coughs. She is interactive, social, laughs and smiles. Should I get her evaluated for speech therapy? If so how do I go about doing so?

I would ask my ped, but she is not very good. I am in the process of finding a new one.

  • DS is not adjusted at all anymore. He only started to babble at about 1 year and has no real words that mean anything yet.  Having even one word at 1 year is good.  Most pedis will not get worried unless there are no words at all by 18 month.  I would not worry.

  • I think it sounds ok.  Did you recently try to qualify for EI or was that when she was younger?

  • You can always call the EI office and request another evaluation to determine if services are needed/qualified for.

All kids go through phases where they discover they like certain sounds (or the reaction they get).   Keep talking to her and keep encouraging her to make other sounds.  I'm sure she will get there.

If you want more ideas you can go to my blog (address in my siggy below).  I have a bunch of posts about encouraging speech.  Hope that helps.

If you want some specific suggestions just page me and let me know.  I'll try to pull together some stuff for you :)

  • Thanks. When she was born they said any babies older than 32 weeks didn't qualify.

She hasn't made any sounds other than squealing and coughing since 4 months. She does go maaaaaaaaaaam and daaeeeeyyyyyy when she whiny right before she's about to cry tho. I think I will call tho, it doesn't hurt to get her evaulated. Would I just call the NICU?

Thanks preemie parent I will check it out.

  • Honestly I wouldn't worry about it and this is why...I was worried that Brendan wasn't going baba, etc....but my mom pointed out that my brother who was born full term didn't utter a sound until he was 13 months old. After that he wouldn't shut up lol.?
  • Lol my sister told me the other day..There is no harm in her being queit and immoble for a little longer :)
