1st Trimester

Any hairdressers/colorists here?

I'm a hairdresser, I work at home here and there, nothing steady but the few times a month I do color people's hair, I want to know if it's ok to do. I'd really rather not do it. Also, I think I'm not supposed to get my hair colored either. Is there a special time that is more crucial, like the first trimester? Thanks!

Re: Any hairdressers/colorists here?

  • From what I've heard it's more of a smell aversion to the hair coloring (ammonia) that puts some women off. ?I've also heard to try not to color your own hair in the first tri but if you must... choose a plant based dye.

    Just what I've heard... ?

  • I worked in a hair salon for 5 years, 9 months of that time I was pregnant with DS. I had my hair colored and bleached all the time as well as was around color/chemicals/you name it. My doc. said it was fine as long as you aren't literally inhaling the fumes. She was more concerned about me being on my feet 9 hours a day more than the fumes.

You can get your hair colored during first tri - it just may not take properly, or take at all.

  • What I've seen says you should be fine, but recommends getting highlights over full-color because it's not on your scalp.

Yea that!  Also, my mw recommended wearing a mask for the first trimester.  I tried to steer my clients toward demi permanent if I could because of the lack of ammonia.  What color line are you using?  Maybe you could switch to something a little less strong for awhile.  We use Wella Koleston Perfect and Color Touch in our salon and it is pretty darn mild as far as chemicals go.  I have heard that Alfaparf, Aveda, and Paul Mitchell are pretty mild as well.  Although, don't expect the color to stay for long with the Alfaparf and Aveda.

I worked 45 hours a week until ds was born, and he turned out great!  Goog Luck!

  • Oh yea and I also avoided using heat because it makes the color process faster which seems to make it more "toxic" smelling.  It better for your client's hair that way anyway!
  • My doctor told me to wait until the end of 1st trimester.  I only dye my hair to cover grays.  I actually finally did it yesterday and used the organic vegetable hair dye from Whole Foods (which has no ammonia or other harsh chemicals that are bad for us and smell bad).  It came out great and covered all of my gray!

I know most people say it is ok, but my philosophy through this is that even if there is a question about a food, hair dye, etc., I am going to stop using it while I am pregnant.  I figure it is a small sacrifice for the baby and only for a few months.

  • That is a great philosophy to have if you color your hair every other month to cover gray.  As a hairstylist, I can't just avoid my color clients for three months.  It is how I make my money.Smile  So if we don't want to lose clients.... we do the best we can.
  • Re: coloring other people's hair - my hairdresser wore gloves when she was pg. That was her choice, but saved her from whatever chemicals getting on her skin/soaking in. Re: Your hair - My doctor said to wait until after 16 weeks to color/highlight. But like pps said...some say you can do it the whole pregnancy, some say you can't do it at all.
