cramping vs. ligament stretching

I'm having trouble telling the difference between lower abdominal cramping and ligament stretching. ?My doctor tells me to come in if I have cramping, but I'm not sure if I am experiencing cramping or stretching...help!!!

Re: cramping vs. ligament stretching

  • ::sitting back waiting for responses:: i'm in the same boat. usually, when my stomach feels "heavy" i'll put that into the RLP category. when i walk or exert any kind of real energy, i get sharp pains in my lower abdomen, i put those in the cramp category and slow down & drink plenty of water.

  • My doctor told me that the sharp short pains are RLP (which I get a lot of...).  She told me it's normal as long as they don't last long, or don't go away with a short rest.

  • My RLP is always gone w/in seconds, and it doesn't just happen.  I do something to cause it- sneeze, cough, laugh, quick movements, etc.

Cramps would feel more achy and not as sharp as RLP and would last longer.

  • RLP can be a "zing" of pain, when you get up, sneeze, cough. Or kind of dull when you're just sitting around.

I consider cramping only like my period or when I gotta poop.

  • Just because the pain doesn't go away immediately does not mean it would be considered cramping. I have had significant pains in my left lower abdomen that last for HOURS and my dr. says they are ligament pains. He says that some people only feel them as shocks where as others are prone to the lasting pain.

I don't think there is a clear answer to your question.

and cramping can come from needing to poop or having gas as well. it's not necessarily a problem..

    ditto this.

I figure if the cramping isn't making me cry or isn't sharp cramping, then I'm a-okay.

  • Thanks for your responses, gals!  After I got into the doctor she determined that it was just stretching...which I now believe because it's been going on for hours over the past week and it's seriously more painful than I thought it would be.  It's off and on, and on more than off, I guess.  As long as it's normal and not something to be concerned about, I guess.  I just hope that when/if it is cramping that I know it!!!  Apparently cramping is bad...at 25 weeks, anyways.  Thanks again!
