Fetal Heart Rate & Gender

Hey, everyone! I'm sure you've all heard the Old Wive's tale about the higher the heart beat, the greater the chance of having a girl. Well, I'm 17 weeks and the heartbeat was 148 bpm. We won't have our next ultrasound until 22 weeks! and I was wondering if anyone has any evidence that heart rate is a good indication of gender? I've read mixed reviews about the correlation between the two online online. If you already know the sex of your baby, what was the heart beat? Just curious...

Re: Fetal Heart Rate & Gender

  • Heart rate has nothing to do with gender.

  • Ours was always high and we are having a girl- but who knows!

  • Everything I've read says that isn't true, our Heart rate has been 160-180 so if its true we should be having a girl.

  • LO's heartrate has always been between 150-167, and he's definitely a boy!

  • You have a 50/50 chance of predicting the gender correctly by paying attention to the heartrate.
  • There is no evidence.

    Heart beat for our guy:
    139, 165, 159, 160

  • my Baby Boys heart rate was high for every appt we have had so far(150-160). They did my ultra sound yesterday and heart rate was 130 and baby is a boy!  So no, unfortunetaly no way you can tell until the ultrasound!

  • Ours was always 155-165 and it's a boy so it was wrong for us!

  • I don't think it is very accurate. You said that you have found mixed reviews online... that's what you will find here too. Sorry but you pretty much have to wait for the u/s.

    lol Yes

  • Do people really believe these things are at all accurate?!

I mean, even those who the are "right" for, aren't nec. b/c it was accurate - obviously you've got a 50/50 shot so they're going to be right for some, that doesn't mean it's true!

Oh and it's sex, not gender.

  • I wasn't looking for a definite you're going to have a boy/girl answer. I was just curious as to whether or not it was accurate for people. I was just curious.

Again, it's going to be accurate for about 50% of people.

Did you read my post? It being "accurate" for some people still has nothing to do with it being right at all. It's a coincidence if it's accurate for some, nothing more.

Obviously. I guess you're just missing the point... the post was meant to be "fun" not help me predict the sex. Isn't that what all the Old Wive's tales are for... fun, not accuracy?!

No offence, but doesn't accurate mean right? So if it was accurate for someone, then it was right for them. That doesn't mean it will be accurate/right for everyone else. Geesh!

Yes, you're right in that those two words mean the same thing...however I am not really using them the same, or I guess clearly.  The fact that the OWT was right or accurate for someone doesn't mean it worked - it just is a coincidence. Since there is a 50/50 shot of it being right for someone, obviously some people are going to get that result - that doesn't mean there is any truth to the OWT.

  • Not that wiki  is a real source, but this is from your source:

    1. differences between men and women, suggesting but not necessitating reference to sex
    2. (sociology) gender role; culture specific behaviour norms, normally but not necessarily, associated with one?s sex; condition of adopting such a gender role.

Sex is what you are born with, it refers to your sex organs.  Gender is a social concept and doesn't always match your sex.

LMAO. That actually made me laugh out loud. Apparently JCM is the only one who got the memo. The words are used interchangeably. I believe someone just likes to argue.

LOL actually no, many of us know about this.  Casually (like wiki says, not sure why that was a good source to prove a point opposite of mine since it goes along w/ what I am saying) yes, people do use them interchangeably (just look at this board tonight), but it's not correct.  Fine if you want to do it, but I'm just saying that we should be talking about the sex, not the gender.

And here is a real source (a medical journal) if you actually care.  https://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/extract/284/23/2997

Like I said, don't care what you want to use, but don't get bent out of shape and act like I am wrong when it's corrected if you're using the wrong terms.

This is also from my sources - but any dictionary (try Merriam-Webster or Cambridge dictionaries online, for instance), will tell you the same
    - to avoid confusion with ?sex? in the sense of ?sexual relations?) The sex of individuals (male or female).
    - sex: the feminine gender.

By the way, I never said your definition wasn't right. But you may want to consider that one word can have more than one meaning.

Edit: I'm out for the night - feel free to open up your dictionary and we may pursue this conversation tomorrow.

A letter to the editor of a magazine by somebody who disagreed with a published story in it is considered to be a real source?

     Okie Dokie.

Once again, the world is wrong.

  • Shocking, my stalker.

If she can cite wiki as a source.... lol

Anyway, does this make everyone feel better? Not sure you can get more legit than the WHO.  https://www.who.int/gender/whatisgender/en/

at my 16 week appt the DOC said - sounds like a girl heartbeat. (170)

We went in on Monday for our big U/S and it is a girl - but her heart rate during the U/S was 140. So you never know!

  • I hope its not true because that would mean I'm having both genders (I can't remember the term stupid preg brain) because our LO's heart rate has been all over the place!!

  • My son's heart rate always seemed to be between the 140's and 170's.  Seemed fairly consistent though in the 150's and 160-high160's.

It is an OWT so I really wouldn't put too much into it.
