Birthing Centers/L&D tours

Hey ladies -

I usually lurk around these boards so that I don't repeat a question that has already been asked a million times.  With that said, I haven't seen this question yet, but b/c I am not on during the day I also used the search function with no results.  So I apologize now if this question is one that is asked a lot during the day:

Have you toured the birthing center and/or labor and delivery where your OB delivers?

My OB-to-be is also my GYN, but she does her GYN practice in a completely different hospital than she does her OB practice.  I really like her, but since I haven't seen where she delivers, I'm worried that it might not have some of the options I'm interested in.

Do any of you plan to tour the place BEFORE conceiving so that you don't have to switch docs mid-pregnancy? Or will you just stick with your doc no matter what?

My fear is that I would either be stuck either delivering in a way I may not want (very clinical, with lots of meds being pushed on me) or delivering the way I want but not with "my" doctor.

I'm probably overthinking this.  I'm just curious if anyone else has come across this issue.

TIA.

Re: Birthing Centers/L&D tours

  • I didn't take a tour of the hospital until I was 32 weeks. I love my OB and would go wherever she delivers!

  • Switching docs isn't that terrible.  I switched from a doc to a midwife during my last pregnancy around 14 weeks.  It really wasn't a big deal. You may change your mind between now and then anyway about what kind of delivery you are looking for.
  • I toured my hospital after my BFP  but before I called to make my first appointment. I wanted to be sure that it was a comfortable place before I committed to my OB. Take a tour and ask lots of questions. I highly recommend it!
  • I love my OB and she is also my GN.  I am pretty sure she works out of the new hospital near me but I will find out soon when we meet with the coordinator.  I will just make my wishes VERY known.

  • I plan to birth at home, so this was sort of a moot point, but I will tour the L&D nearest me soon and a couple that were recommended, in case I have to deliver in a hospital.

But I specifically chose my care provider and 'interviewed' her before I started ttc to make sure I was happy with that person and wouldn't be in a situation where I needed to switch.  So far, I've been happy with her care.  The exception is that I loathe her backup, and so I need to find my own back-up OB in case of being risked out of homebirth.

  • I belong to an HMO so I only get one hospital to choose from. So it was easy to decide without touring. Huh?

  • Thank you for the thoughts, ladies.  Greatly appreciated!  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being neurotic!

P.S. I'm sorry I have this post on two boards.  Neither board will let me delete...something about a forum administrator and only a certain amt of time to delete posts??? Confused

  • I know my Dr delivers at the hospital I like because that's how I found him (emergency surgery for ectopic pregnancy 3 years ago). And he also have privileges at another area hospital that is really good. I like both hospitals, so I guess I'm lucky.

I'm overly excited to tour the hospitals and ask questions (I've been to both visiting friends/family who were pregnant). But I guess it's more approrpriate to hold off on tours til 3rd tri. though I know that some women go earlier.

  • If I were looking for a caregiver or deciding between hospitals and felt strongly about certain things - I would definitely tour early.  Better to tour early and make sure the hospital allows the things you want - because your doc won't be there through the whole labor to advocate for you.  So a great doc is important, but I honestly think a great hospital is equally important, if not more important.

  • I am going to tour the three hospitals where my OB delivers and decide based on that.
  • My ob does not deliver Sad  The nurse we saw last week was really nice.  I wanted to deliver at the hospital closest to us, but we were informed they don't deliver there.  We are taking a tour next month to ensure this is what we really want.
