1st Trimester

Confirming pregnancy w/o ultrasound?

I have my first appt on Friday - I'll be 8 weeks.  This appt is with a LNP and is mostly for bloodwork.  No ultrasound until 1st Tri Sceening in a few weeks.

So...this is my first pregnancy.  I'm super paranoid about miscarriage given the high stats.  Can they confirm everything's ok w/o doing an ultrasound?  I've read you can miscarry w/o bleeding. I would think that the pregnancy hormone Hcg would stick around in your body for a while even if you've miscarried, so a HPT alone wouldn't confirm it, right?

Sorry if this is a dumb question - I just haven't seen this be asked )recently anyway) and I really want to know. Your thoughts?

 Thanks!

  • Your levels will confirm if you are KU or not, and doubling will confirm a viable pregnancy, so yes they can confirm it all without an u/s...although its less exciting for you.

To add to this, doubling hormones does not necessarily confirm a viable pregnancy. It just means that your pregnancy is growing. Ectopic pregnancies can have doubling hormone levels (though most don't), but they are not viable pregnancies. Though, TYPICALLY the doubling theory is correct.

Not everyone has their levels checked though.

To the OP, if you are worried I would just ask them if they could check to make sure the pregnancy is where it is suppose to be. They might do it and they may not, but it never hurts to ask. Good luck hun!

  • I just wanted to add "good luck."

I'm sure everything is fine. A lot of drs don't do a u/s at the first appt.

  • The only reason I got my 1st 2 U/S's was because my beta levels looked funny to the doctors so they ordered them. Otherwise my doc wouldn't have tried to do a US until my 20 week appointment.

I lucked out and my doctor's office has a portable u/s machine and since "he couldn't find the hb" easily he just did a quicky u/s right there.

From what I've heard HCG numbers start to drop if the PG isn't viable for most people. I wouldn't worry until your doctor gives you something to worry about.

  • I did not have an u/s at my first appointment. I did have an internal exam where the doc felt my uterus and said it felt right on track for where I was at the time (8 weeks).

  • Thanks guys - super helpful.

For those of you who had your Hcg levels tested, did you find those out immediately? I ask because we planned on telling the parents this weekend

If they send you for 2 HCGs usually they are 2 days apart at the same time and same lab.....usually you'll get the results the next day. Depending on where you go. If you go EARLY you might get them later that day it all depends. Sometimes they just send you for 1 to confirm pregnancy, but I think that is pretty rare....its usually 2 to make sure there is close to doubling numbers.

  • I totally understand being nervous and scared, but the odds are really in your favor.  You have 75-80% odds of a healthy pregnancy, and that increases every two weeks until after 12 weeks.  And there are plenty of ways, previously mentioned, to get a sense of whether or not things are on track without u/s.

If you don't require an u/s or blood monitoring, that is a good thing, because it means you don't have a history of IF or pregnancy complications or loss, and remain low risk.  Just work on the theory that all is well - because it most likely is!

  • I only had one set of bloodwork done and was worried at first because I heard so many ladies on here talk about two sets or even more..but I have learned that it is good if you do not have to check on your bloodwork multiple times! GL!
