Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Percentiles

How are percentiles calculated?  I just saw a post that said their LO was 11lbs and 3oz at 1 month and that was considered the 79th percentile.  My LO was 11 pounds and 3oz at her 2 month check up and I was told that she was in the 87th percentile.  This just doesn't add up.

Re: Percentiles

  • They are different for boys and girls, if the other poster has a boy that might be it.

  • It is plotted on a growth chart based on age - so the percentiles would be different for a 1 and 2 month old of the same size.

  • DD's pedi says 50% is average for babies, so anything above 50 is above average and anything below is, of course, below average. Other than that, however, I dunno how they come up with a particular percentile for the baby's stats.

I think it is also based on their birth weight.  For instance, DD was 6 lbs when she was born and was 9 lbs 5 oz at her 2 month appointment.  She is in the 25th percentile.  But if she had been born at 8 lbs and was 9 lbs 5 oz, that would put her in a lower percentile.  Does that make sense?

Percentiles are a comparison with other babies of the same age.  Birth weight/length doesn't factor into it.

Yea, I still don't get it.  The website gave me this for her 4 month stats

    At 4 months:

your child is 14.5 pounds, and that is
at the 57th percentile for weight.

your child is 25 inches, and that is
at the 65th percentile for height

The doctor told me she was 90% for height and 88% for weight.

Oh well, either way she's pretty proportionate and healthy!

  • There are different charts.  The charts used to be calculated using formula fed babies only.  Some charts are ff and bf babies and now there are charts for bf babies only.

The actual percentage itself does not matter.  The only thing that matters is that weight gain and growth are as expected.  If your LO is in the 75th percentile at 4 months and then in the 15th percentile at 6 months, then that is an indication that something could be wrong.
