2nd Trimester

Who's getting 3D done of baby..why, why not

I was thinking from the beginning that DH and I won't get it done as it's 200..We were told at our last ultrasound that we are having a boy...but we werent given a percentage of the techs guess...Im guessing most boys do turn out to be boys...and girls are more of the mixed up...Im wondering if it would be worth it to get done...or if I get another ultrasound later on in this pregnancy- third tri ultrasound>>??

Re: Who's getting 3D done of baby..why, why not

  • I'm not for 2 reasons. 1)It's expensive for us. 2) I have an anterior placenta and I've heard it's harder to see anything.

  • We're not getting it done because we'd rather spend the money on something else for the baby being as we'll see him soon enough for free!

  • I will but only because I got a free coupon! LOL we have been told we need sonos every 3-4 weeks so I will have no shortage of seeing him :)

I did it the first time and it was OK.. he was never in a good spot to see him really good.. but it was a fun thing to do with BFF and MIL :)

  • I'm not.

    1)  We get another "big u/s" at 22 weeks since HJ wouldn't flip over to show us his heart.

    2)  It's pricey & we need the money for other things.

If your u/s tech said it with some degree of certainty than why are you worried? I would guess you would have another u/s in 3rd tri (I know I'm having at least one), but that's something to ask your doctor.

Personally, I think the 3D images are a little creepy and if the gender isn't a surprise, I at least want what he looks like to be.

  • Haha my husband and I are sure that they saw the umbilical cord not the privates when they looked! We are not getting a 3D because of the cost...and honestly, some babies look scary on those!! We do get another ultrasound in 3rd tri. Check with your insurance to see how many they cover (it's usually two), and check with your OB/GYN to see if they do a 3rd tri ultrasound. My office does three, 1 in each trimester.
  • I did it at 18 wks because my doctor wouldn't tell us the sex until between 22-24 wks and it was only $80. We are going back to the same place at 30 wks because it discounted to $60 if you have been there before.

  • I am only because my mom wants me to so she's paying and I only get one ultrasound this whole pregnancy so it will be nice to see the LO again!
  • I am for a few reasons:

    1. We got a really good price on one- $100

    2. I know it will mean a lot to my mom, she thinks they are so cool and this is her first grandchild.

    3. It will also allow my MIL to see an u/s and it's her first grandchild as well so I know she'd really like to see one and I don't feel comfortable with her at doctor's appts with me.

  • We just had it done recently and are so happy that we did!  It really was amazing to see her in 3D and we got a ton of great pictures.  If money was tight we would have skipped it but I felt it was worth every penny and was really special.
  • My insurance only covers one 2D ultra sounds the one at 20 weeks I paid out of pocket for the 12 week one but I will not pay for another just to be sure of sex.  They told us at 21 weeks it was a boy so we are going blue if we are wrong we will have a girl in boys clothes.  Can't afford any extras right now.

  • We are for two reasons:

    1) My husband is a huge nerd and thinks the technology is cool. ?Seriously. <rolls eyes>

    2) My mother gave us the money for it as a Mother's Day gift. ?In return, we're planning to surprise her with copies of everything we get. :)?

  • We are getting one done, just for a keepsake more than anything.  We weren't at first but at our last ultra sound DH got so excited that he said we are definatly getting one.

This! LOL! My mom disagreed and I said my mind could be changed if she wanted to pay for one, but alas she did not.

We get a third tri U/S anyway, so I'll have them look at his package one more time to make sure :)

  • Nope. I had a free one done for ds. I just don't think it is worth the price. If they give me another free one, I won't refuse.?
  • We will be.  It's about $150 at a center here.  I guess we're just doing it because we want to.  We'll only have one ultrasound around 22 weeks.  So we would really like to see our baby again.  Plus my ILs just gave us some money for the baby so we're fine in terms of the baby budget.
  • We're not, too expensive... ?I also don't think they give much of what the child will look like. ?As far as for really checking for gender, techs only make those mistakes once every blue moon.

  • we are not.

    they are expensive ($250)

    they are creepy, IMO

  • I have  twins so i get monthly ultrasounds as is - and last time they did in
    3D anyway.

If I didnt have twins though I would do it...the way I look at it is, you are only pregnant for a short period of time, if possible,  you should enjoy every opportunity that is possible.

$200 sounds pricey, btw...I'd shop around because I know people who have gotten them for as low as $60.

  • i'm not.. dont really see a reason to. would rather spend my money on something else. i'll see the kid soon enough either way
  • I don't even know where to inquire about getting them done. I might be interested, but I'd need to find out the cost!

  • I had one done about 2 weeks ago (I got lucky and my aunt is an ultrasound tech, and needed preg. women to teach the US on) however, he was facing down with his butt up for most of it so it was hard to get a good pic, I would not pay for one for this reason, you just never know if they will coroporate.
  • It's part of our regular anatomy scan.  Love my OB's office.
  • I am getting one at 16w4days for gender determination, its 30 minutes for $80.

  • We did, but only b/c Emma had the cord between her legs and had her legs crossed.  We were dying to find out, so we got the 4D done.  But now that we did, I think we will every time.  I know it seems weird for people, including my husband, but once you're in there and see her face, it's so worth it!

  • We did have one done and it was worth it IMO...this is the first grandchild on both sides, and the technology is amazing...it's really something to see your baby move around (yawn, smile, turn)...we also have it all on DVD and CD's of all the pictures...if I get around to it, we will make a scrapbook for all those "firsts"

  • We are, but only because they do it at my doctor's office and it doesn't cost me any more.  Otherwise I'd be taking a big old pass on that :
  • I got one for free at my high risk doctor (total surprise).  I wouldn't pay for it though.  I have other things to spend money on.
  • I am. It's standard practice for my OB and my insurance covers it. It is done for the 20 week scan.

  • We got it done because dr's office unexpectedly cancelled our big u/s 2 hours before the appointment.  I couldn't wait anymore and we found a great place that a half hour session with photo cd for $119.  DH loved seeing his little man so much that he is demanding we go back at 28-29 weeks to see him again.  So cute!
  • I am getting one done. Lucky for me I work in the medical field so i get a discount, 75 bucks for a CD and tons of pictures!! what a super deal!        And this is my first baby so thats another big reason! Big Smile

  • We are staying Team Green, but even if we wanted to know the sex, I would not get another ultrasound just to determine the sex or just to see the baby again.

Actually, while ultrasounds are safe, the FDA has issued a caution against having ultrasounds done just to determine the sex or just to see the baby. So we are just having the ultrasounds that the dr thinks are necessary (NT Scan, Anatomy Screen, & 28 week u/s to check on my low-lying placenta).
