Trying to Get Pregnant

What do you take for your allergies??

I am on the hunt for some new allergy meds.  I have no idea what I can take while TTC or pregnant.  I didn't even cross that bridge when pregnant because it was in the winter.  So what do you take, do you like it, what don't you like about it???  Thanks ladies!

Re: What do you take for your allergies??

  • DH takes Apple Cider Vinegar( with the mother/ unpasturized) and Honey mix when his allergies/sinus infections act up. He gets really bad sinus infections to the point of needing strong meds, and with the ACV and Honey, there's no need, and it's over in about 3 days, max.

  • I believe Allegra 180mg, Zyrtec and Clartin are the only allergy pills that you can take while pregnant or Tcc.  I tried Zyrtec and had to stop taking it because it made me soooooo sleepy.  I would take it at night and still be zombie like in the afternoon the next day.   I am now taking Claritin which does not work as well, but no side affects so far.

allegra (category C) is not recommended while ttc or pg. I used to take that and was switched to zyrtec (category B).

  • I think Tylenol Sinus was ok'd by my dr.

  • I take clartin.  I like it because it doesn't make me sleepy, however I feel like it wears off by the evening.  At night, before bed I usually take 1 benadryl .
  • My family Dr told me zyrtec and singulair are ok to take while pregnant.  I however, have just been suffering because I don't want to take anything unneccesary.  My alergies haven't been horrible though since i got my BFP.

I have mild allergies and usually just take some Tylenol Sinus Headache or a Benadryl depending.  (I'm pretty sure both of these are safe when your KU, but not sure)

I also use the netipot frequently and that helps SO much, and is completely safe to use while TTC or KU!

  • Rhinocourt Aqua is safe for pregnancy and what is currently keeping me alive.

Also, I've heard Neti Pots are excellent ways to deal naturally with allergies. I bought one but haven't had the time (read guts) to try it yet.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Alavert. I also took Rhinocort when I was pg and it worked really well.

  • Zyrtec, Claritin, Chlor-Trimeton, and Benadryl are the only allergy meds that are preg. cat. B as far as I know (and not Zyrtec D or Claritin D, these are not okay because they contain pseudoephedrine - Sudafed)

Personally I would avoid Tylenol Sinus (and anything else like it) because it contains Phenylephrine which is preg. cat. C

edit *I only mentioned oral meds here, there are nasal meds that are OK as some other people have said*

  • All the over the counter allergy pills made so so sleepy. I went to a Allergy Dr and he gave me nasonex nose spray. I had horrible nasal allergies... sneezing, running nose during the day and stuffed at night. Anyway I have been taking it for about a month and I feel completely better. He promised me that it is safe even while PG.

this is what my dr told me yesterday and I have allergies and asthma as well.  I take regular zyrtec and a plain nasal spray (it's just saline and water) and usually am fine (esp this time of the year when it's REALLY bad w/the weather and all)

Also try a netipot if you're very susceptible (sp?)

  • I had bad seasonal, cat dander and dustmite allergies. I took Allegra at first and then it just didn't work anymore, I ended up with Flonase for years and I love that stuff. It is a steriod that is sprayed in your nose, it has a honey scent to it. It cleared up the allergies in a couple days and after regular use, it worked great. I have pretty much grown out of all of my allergies so I haven't taken it in the last 3 years or so.

     Good luck to you.

nasonex is a category C as well and is NOT recommended while pg. Rhinocart is a safe alternative and is category B. I would ask to be switched if I were you.

  • My OB has approved Claritin for use while pregnant. I'm avoiding all meds right now though. I clean out my sinuses a couple of times a day with Netti Pott and I use a saline spray. I'm still having a lot of problems, but I'm just not comfortable using medication right now.
