do you make your own tomato sauce for spaguetti?

i was wondering about this, because my mom makes her own spaguetti sauce and i love it! but dh doesnt like my mom's recipe so i just buy newman's own marinara because he loves that stuff..  sooo do you make your own? or buy?

and do you add stuff to the sauce you bought (if you buy) ? i always end up ading a little bit of sugar to the marinara because its a little to acidic for my taste..

  • I usually make my own, but if I am in a hurry, I get a jar and just add a few things to it.

  • We buy jarred. We always add spices to it and a lot of garlic.

  • I buy jarred and then doctor it up. Homemade is better, but I'm not much for canning. My mom makes it with all home grown ingredients from her garden and it's yummy, but time consuming! She boils it overnight, etc. Too much work for this lazy girl!

  • I always make my own, but I used canned tomato sauce... is that not homemade?
  • I buy the jar kind and then add veggies, meat and spices to it.  I couldn't even begin to tell you how to actually make homemade sauce.  I consider mine homemade since I put all that other stuff in it. :)

  • We just used jarred.  Newman's.  Either Marinara, Peppers & Onions, or Sockarooni.  For us, spaghetti = cheap, fast, & easy.  So, when we have it, it usually for the convenience.  I would love to make my own...maybe one day.  I may start doctoring the jarred stuff after reading what some of the PP do with theirs, though!  Smile
  • I made a bunch last summer because we had a ton of tomatoes.  Here is the recipe.  It makes a ton & freezes very well & has that "fresh" taste when warmed up.

  • It depends. We always have jarred stuff on hand, just in case we need dinner in 10 minutes. But I usually make my own to fit what I'm serving better.?

I make my own...My Italian grandmother would have a fit if I bought the jarred stuff! LOL...It is really easy.  I don't have a recipe exactly, I just fry down a couple of cans of tomato paste, add garlic, onions, and green peppers and brown them with the tomato paste.  Then add about 4 cans of tomato sauce and enough water to thin it out a bit.  I season it with oregano, parsley, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, brown sugar, Tony Chachere's, chili powder, etc.  Cook at least 3 or 4 hours and freeze what you don't eat! YUM!

Best tip for freezing sauce is place a few cups in a gallon ziploc bag and freeze flat so that it will thaw faster.  I also freeze flat 2 cups in sandwich bags for when I make quick chicken parm and ravioli for just dh and I.  You just put the ziploc bags in a container of cool water and they thaw in no time.  Lining small and large ricotta containers with the plastic bags makes it easier to put the sauce inside.

  • I buy Classico and always add a bunch of crap!
