Please Help - DD's freaking out

DD hasn't eaten in a while, but every time I put her to my breast, she eats for maybe a minute and then starts freaking out crying, and she won't latch on, she won't eat...she just freaks out.

All that calms her down is a paci.  So I give her the paci, she calms down, we try to eat again, and same thing, she is screaming and won't latch on.  I had some milk in the fridge so we gave it to her just to get some food in her, and she's eating that fine, the only thing we've noticed with that is she's eating really slow and not sucking a whole lot.

She's gone from paci and bottle to breast just fine since 4 weeks so I don't think it's nipple confusion or anything like that.  I just don't know what to think, I don't know what to do.

Why all of a sudden would she not want to latch on and eat?  It just doesn't make sense to me.  I don't know what to do.

  • Did you eat something weird that could be turning her off?

Sorry you are dealing with fussiness!

  • when you say a while how long?  could she just be tired and lazy and not want to work for the milk, thats why she took the bottle?

do you take a while to let down?  maybe you could try pumping til you letdown and then see if your dd will stay on the breast?

    good luck!

Honestly my diet doesn't change much from day to day, I can't think of anything I've eaten that's out of the ordinary?

Last time she ate was probably 5 hours ago.  I'm sure she's tired, she hasn't slept in a while either.  I have a fast letdown, and when she pulls off screaming I can see milk is coming out and is in her mouth.

  • Could be the opposite problem: your letdown is too FAST and she's freaking out/choking. Can you pump some (to save in case you need it) and then try feeding her? She's probably way overtired, and that's making it all worse. She might be fine again after some sleep!

  • I thought about that, if my letdown is too fast...the only thing I don't understand there is she's 6 weeks old and it's never been a problem until now?
  • My DS does this when I wait to feed him too long.  If I don't notice the subtle hunger signs, he freaks out, then I try to feed him, and he does that thing where he shakes his head left and right, and kicks, est.  If that's not it, I'd recommend a lactose consultant, they are amazing.
