3rd Trimester

imagine being 5 weeks overdue?!

i was asking my midwife today about when they generally decide to induce. she told me when she first began 30 years ago they waited up to 5 weeks past a due date! since they didn't have the technology to determine an accurate due date they waited much longer. can you even imagine? she told me that they wait 2 weeks until they induce. i sure hope it doesn't come to that.

Re: imagine being 5 weeks overdue?!

  • I'd give myself a c-section at 45 weeks.  OMG I would die.
  • omg, I can't imagine having to wait that much longer than expected!  My doc induces at 42 weeks but will give me the option around 41...
  • thank god for modern technology!

    Seriously - that is crazy.

  • Uuuuugh

I imagine it wouldn't be altogether often that a woman woudl REALLY go 5 weeks overdue. Like the MW said, determining due dates wasn't as accurate a science at that point.

  • I couldn't imagine going through another 10 weeks of this!
  • That is freaking insane. I could not imagine. My doc will not let me go 41w and 4 days
  • I think they did it because without early u/s, it was hard to get an accurate EDD. My mom has all kinds of stories about 8lb "premie" babies and 7 lbs "4 week overdue" babies.

My brother came at 43 wks. Mom mom says that she was beginning to feel like she would be pregnant for the rest of her life. And no, the EDD wasn't wrong - he was nearly 11lbs and could lift his head at birth! (If you're curious, she went into labor naturally but did eventually have a c/s).

  • MIL used to tell me that she was a whole month overdue with dh now she says it was only 3 weeks.

i think she just didnt really know how to calculate it...

umm, no I don't want to imagine being 5wks overdue! lol
  • When my mom was pregnant with me they allowed her to go 4 weeks overdue. They induced her finally on August 31 so that I would make the September 1 cut-off date to start Kindergarten. So, yes mom was pregnant for four extra weeks in the month of August!!!!

  • my mother delivered both my older brother and i on our due dates...i hope i follow the same history!
  • omg I almost died laughing!!
  • Holy crap! Five weeks! We were all late -- anywhere between 4 and 15 days. UGH. I can't imagine. Though if I make it to Monday's doctor appointment, I'll already be two days past. Then I'm hoping my doc will come up with a plan of action.?

I can't even think about it, how awful.
  • Yeah, apparently all the women in my family are 4 wks overdue when they have their babies naturally. My mom was 4wks with me and they induced her once & it didn't take. I came a little later on my own. Her mom had 5 kids and was 4 wks overdue with all of them.

I have no hope at all.

  • Maybe that's why my grandmother weighed 13 pounds at birth. lol
  • My uncle was four weeks overdue ? I can't even imagine what my poor grandmother went through! ?But this was back in the day when they used to knock women out cold, deliver using forceps, and when she'd wake up: poof! ?Baby.

Ditto this.  Apparently I was 5 weeks late, yet a whopping 6 lbs9 oz.

  • Holy hell! I cannot imagine that! I had a hard enough time being 1 week overdue with #1!
  • Ya, my original due date was July 4th and I was born August 14th -- and was 5lbs6oz at birth.  That original EDD was complete bullsh*t clearly and my Mom was not five weeks overdue...yet if you talk to her you get the five weeks overdue story everydamntime.

    LOL!!!

My MIL & FIL SWEAR that they will let you go 4 weeks over due (today).

So DH and I explained that they didn't know how to correctly get a EDD... and they said... "yes they did! They had a wheel!"

    LOL!!!

  • Just visiting from 2nd tri and thought I would comment on this one.  My mom was 44.5 weeks pregnant when she finally delivered my brother.  He was due around Thanksgiving and was born a couple of days before Christmas.  I couldn't even imagine!!!

He is 30 now for what that's worth.
