How much would you spend?

I have the upholstered rocker and ottoman from Pottery Barn in my nursery, but have yet to buy the slipcovers.  They really need the slipcovers becasue the fabric of the upholstery is just a very generic and thin muslin looking fabric and looks very unfinished.  The rocker/ottoman weren't designed to be used without slipcovers.  So....here's my dilemma:

If I order the slipcovers from Pottery Barn, it will be about $600 total including shipping and tax.  However, I'm not all that thrilled with the fabric options (colors).  ...which is why I still haven't purchased anything.

Or, I can pay roughly $650+ to have custom slipcovers made in my choice of fabric.  I wouldn't go this route unless I find the absolute perfect fabric in a color I love.

But...there is a little part of me that thinks its crazy to spend this kind of money on slipcovers period.  Maybe I should just give up on having a chair in the nursery altogether.  We do have a glider in the family room that I can use to nurse the baby (would have to stay in the family room).  But the family room is on the main level and the nursery (and our bedroom) are on the 2nd level of the house.

I've tried ebay, but so far have had no luck finding any slipcovers that I like.  I've also tried etsy, but also no luck.

What would you do?

Re: How much would you spend?

  • If I lived close to you I would make you a slip cover for 400.  lol

Honestly I wouldn't spend that kind of money but to us that kind of money is a LOT!  It's almos a mortg. payment!

I would not be spending $600 or anywhere close on slip covers.  And you'll need a chair in the nursery, you won't want to go downstairs all the time, especially in the middle of the night.

Have you looked at other options? - like a different chair that comes with a cover? or covers that you could buy elsewhere that would be a better price?

I am no help, i just left the Gucci store this morning and splurgged(sp). GL
  • I don't know what to tell you both choices are too expensive for me LOL. I must be real cheap because I will not spend that much money on a rocker, no way no who. I got mine from my crazy SIL she spent about $500 on the chair and ottoman and never used it NEVER.

  • Can you still return the rocker and ottoman to PB? If so, you could probably return it and buy a less expensive glider to use in the nursery.
If not, I would just get the slip covers made. It's only $50 more and you can choose the colors. But make sure they will be done in time.
I'd suggest just making them yourself, but if you spend that much on a chair and ottoman, you might as well not put crappy covers on them. And seriously, do you really want to sew your own? I know I'm too lazy and I even have a sewing machine!

  • What about getting a different ottoman and rocker that is cheaper then $600??
  • It sounds like you already bought the chair and ottoman, so I'd get a slipcover so that you can use it. If you can return it and use furniture you already have and want to save the money, then I'd do that.

I would make it myself (I've sewn slipcovers before), but realize that's not helping you. Is your custom quote from PB or from an independent seamstress or upholsterer? I would think that you could get one made for less. If you don't like the standard options, I'd do custom. The chair is an investment, so I'd pay a little extra to get it the way I want.

  • Yeah this is out of my price range too, but we don't have that kind of extra income to spend on the nursery, and I am certainly not starting our child's life our modeling to go into debt and putting it on credit to get name brand stuff.

I found slipcovers at Walmart (on-line) and I ordered one, but it was so ill-fitting, it looked horrible.  I sent it back.  Their color options are also awful.  I'm not sure where else to look for slipcovers, unless I attempt to make them myself which would probably turn out to be a huge waste of time and $$.

  • If you are willing to spend that kind of money I would def go with the custom covers to get exactly what you want. Don't settle for something that you will hate or wish you didn't buy in the future.

  • Our rocker/recliner that we bought WAS a little over $600...so I find it atrocious that PB feels the need to charge that for just the slipcovers....

However, if I had the money to do it...between your two choices I would spend the $50 more and get the one that I really like...I would do this after scouring ebay, craigslist, etsy, froogle and e-mailing anyone that looks like they have the skills to be hired....

  • Thanks ladies!  I actually purchased the chair on Craigslist and got a great deal (didn't think about the slipcovers I would need).  The slipcover that came on the chair was a bit worn, but the chair itself is in great condition.  I attempted to wash the slipcover, but shrunk it in the process so now I need a new slipcover.  I bought the ottoman at Walmart - but it's the exact same dimensions as the one Pottery Barn sells.  I guess I could go without the ottoman....but I've read so many recommendations on having a place to elevate your feet while breastfeeding.

I wouldn't have to put the slipcover on a credit card (we have the funds to pay cash), but I still feel crazy spending so much on the slipcovers.  That would be the most expensive thing in my nursery.  I'm a bargain shopper and have been able to get screaming deals on everything else so far.  ...maybe justification to splurge on this one item?????

    Uugh!

  • I think JC Penny used to have slipcovers. Might be worth looking. But all the standard ones won't fit as well.

I'd get a custom cover with a fabric that you could use in another room after the baby no longer needs a nursery. The price isn't too bad if you can use the chair for many years.

  • I would suggest going to several fabric stores in your area and asking if they can help you. Tell them you are looking for someone that can make slipcovers for a rocker and ottoman and if they can suggest someone. I wouldn't even pretend to know that it's a Pottery Barn chair.....just say you got it on Craigslist for $100, shrunk the cover and now need a new one. This is bad, but play poor face and make them feel sorry for you. Just say how you're getting close to your due date and you really need a cover so you have somewhere to nurse. I bet you could find someone to make one for $400 or less.

  • I would look at upolstery shops I'm sure they would make one for less.  My MIL would charge around $400 for this with your choose of fabrics so I would think any other shop would be a similar price (most fabrics run about $30 a yard for this kind of quality).  If you can't find someone to make it I would go the $650 route it's not much more for custom.

This.  Well, either this, or shell out the big bucks for the PBarn slipcovers.

I agree that you can have the slipcovers made pretty inexpensively.  In my area, you could have something like this done for around $300 including the cost of fabric.

  • There is a part of Etsy that allows you to put out a "wanted" ad. It's called alchemy--you can discribe what you are looking for, and what you are willing to spend. Sellers who are interested can then bid on your project.

I did this for my mobile. I didn't like the matchy-match one that went with our bedding (plus it was overpriced for how it looked, IMO), so I wanted to make my own (but I am not crafty) and did not want to spend a ridiculous amount of money. So I made an alchemy request and received probably 15 bids on the project at prices I was willing to pay.

I don't know if this helps you, but it worked well for me.
