Poll: TTC testing

I got in a debate with a friend of mine yesterday.  She claimed that regardless of age you shouldn't go to the doctor until at least 1 full year of TTC if not 1.5 years (She is 37 now).  She tried for 2.5 years before getting pregnant and claimed that the drugs, testing, etc stressed her out way too much and that when she finally relaxed it happened(she got pregnant the cycle between IVF rounds 1 and 2).  I was shocked that she was touting the whole relax crap.  I have 2 other friends who also struggles for years and needed IVF, who claim test as early as possible and stress doesn't cause IF so ignore the relax suggestions.

I will be 35 on Sunday and in cycle 4.  At this point, I am not really worried, but I am kind of the belief that at my age, I really shouldn't wait 1+ years for testing.  Whether or not I do any medicated cycles before a year is another discussion, but I'd hate to wait to test and find out that I have blocked tubes or something easily correctable.

I am just curious about other people's thoughts on going to see an RE.

Re: Poll: TTC testing

  • I think it's totally reasonable that someoen who is considered "advanced maternal age" and who also is charting and aware of what is or is not going on with their body should go in for testing earlier than the one year mark.

  • I went to an RE after 2 losses, and was referred by my OB. Had it taken me longer than 6 months to get pregnant (I'm 35), I would have seen an RE at that time as well.

i think everyone is different and there's nothing wrong with that.  If someone feels comfortable waiting longer than they are required to, then that's just fine.  Someone who's 24 and someone who's 34 both are technically supposed to wait a year before going, but if the 24 year old wants to wait 2 or 3 years, there's much less harm in that than if the 34 year old waits.  But it's still each one's decision.

Now, that said, i really don't advocate people going before they're supposed to.  In your case, go in 6-12 months from ttc because you'll be 35, right on the line.  But it can take months to get an appointment with an RE because they're so busy, so if you are less than 35, please don't make someone who's 35 wait longer just because you're impatient and want a baby NOW.  Grow up and wait a year.

I completely agree with this.  I wasn't advocating going early by any means.  I've heard stories of RE's being tied up with people that are just impatient.  And definitely agree that if I were younger, I would wait a few years. I was just shocked that someone my age that had issues said that I should be waiting even longer than a year.

  • MY OB/GYN told me that because of my age, she wants me to call her if I'm not pregnant after six months. ?I'm only 30, so I don't necessarily agree with that timeline. ?I'm certainly the most impatient person on the planet, but even I feel like that's a little quick. ?We'll cross that bridge if/when we come to it, but if you asked me today what I'd do, I probably wouldn't call until it's been longer than that. ?

That's because tcoyf is trying to promote charting as getting you pregnant quicker.

  • We've already been referred to an RE (I'm 27, and June is our 1 year of trying mark) because of the 3 losses but I still haven't made the appt yet. I will at some point over the summer most likely but we're trying to save up a little more since it can be so expensive.

Wow. I am 30 also and I agree with you that 6 months seems quick. I think I would wait until a year, but thats just me.
