Why? I feel like up to this point all of the appointments have been to make sure everything is fine with me and the baby so I don't view this procedure as anything different.
My doctor doesn't do them until 40wks unless you ask him too. I had him do one yesterday at 36wks since I was already getting the gbs test done. He said he wouldn't do another until 38wks and then only if I want him to.
At this point, I don't really care one way or the other. If she does one, fine...it not, that's fine, too. It hurt like hell last week so I certainly won't ASK for one!
1) It doesn't actually tell you much of anything. You can be 1cm dilated and go into labor a few hours later. You can also walk around at 4 cm for weeks.
2) The more internals you get, the more bacteria and such gets up in there and increases the risk of infection
3) It can, on occasion, break your water. When I'm 36 weeks, I'd like to reduce any chances of that happening that I can.
YES! My OB is thrilled. I am a very anxious person and I know that this will make me much more anxious so I am waiving them unless I am late and she medically requres one. When it happens it will happen.
I go for a check up today and she will just give me my Strep Results and mesure me....love it. Sweet and simple
I'm not looking forward to the internal, but I do want to know what's going on, if anything. Although, if it's a big, fat nothing, I'm sure I'll be disappointed.
I go tomorrow and that will be my first internal (40 weeks 3 days). They would do them if I asked, but I heard they are not the most comfortable thing in the world! Plus, the way they see it, which makes sense, is that there really is no use in knowing you are dialated if you haven't had contractions, water broken, or bloody show since you can be dialated for weeks before.
My Dr. let me know that I could only waive my 36wk internal, because he did one at 35wks when he did my GBS test. I don's care either way, but didn't realize I had an option. SO not waiving them at this point (I did at my 36wk appt today), but probably won't waive them in the future.

I had one last Wednesday. 3.5cm, 80% effaced. It got DH and I so excited (and our family so excited as well) but still no baby. So, now I'm re-training my brain to expect this baby to be LATE. It's hard to do.
DS #1 Born 5/19/2009 Sunshine in my life!
DS #2 Born 6/3/2011 at 26 weeks, 4 days; passed away 6.5 hours later
Transabdominal cerclage placed 4/16/2012
BFP 6/20/12!!!
My midwives won't do them before 40 weeks, and then only at my request. They prefer to wait until after 40 weeks and then only to see what type of induction I may be eligible for, if necessary and desired to induce.
I aksed my MW if this was common practice there and she said there's no reason to have to go through with them unless I am having signs of labor. I don't want to know that I'm 2 cm and 80% effaced and then get everyone all excited, when I know that I could walk around like that for weeks.
I was happy when the MW at my OB's practice said they didn't do them until you're overdure. But yesterday I went for my GBS and the Dr. gave me one since he was already there... then he told me nothing was happening.
I really preferred not knowing anything at all and just wait on the contractions. I left there feeling disappointed yesterday. No more for me
My dr does wants me to get them because i went so fast the first time. Even though they aren't 100% accurate, she wants to know when all conditions are favorable. When my cervix is all thinned out and ready to go, she wants me to come in and be induced since my last labor was 4 hours start to finish. I barely made it to the hospital.
I have my 36 wk apt this afternoon. I'm not sure what my office's policy is, but I have been planning on declining an internal until at least EDD (for the reasons you mention). I don't think they will have any problem with it.

Re: Anyone else waiving internals?
I'm too anxious. I wanna know what's going on down there.
P.S. Check your e-mail.
i am. if i lived further away form the hospital i may want to know.
but i am so close. once i get close contractions i know i can get there in time.
I'm waiving it for a few reasons.

I WISH I would have.

I love knowing that things are progressing, even if very slowly. I lifts my spirits and helps me see that, yes, the end is in fact near!
I do find it rather uncomfortable a little more so because my dr is a dude, but oh well.

I had one at 36wks with the GBS test. She was head down and engaged, so they won't do another one until before my induction at 39wks.
They need to know how far down her head is to determine the best way to induce me.
I don't want it done at every visit. I'm too tired to dress and undress any more than I have to!
