Clogged tear ducts

Someone posted a week or so ago about having to go get their LOs tear ducts checked out because they were blocked. I responded that my DS had an appointment yesterday for his tear ducts. I was just giving the update as I promised. His tear ducts were still blocked in both eyes. They put drops in his eyes when we got there. The doctor came in a little bit later and looked in his eye with a device that made the the stuff they put in his eyes glow. He told us they needed to be probed. I didn't go back with him at this point because I couldn't bear to hear DS scream. The doctor said it would hurt like a shot. They ran something through his tear ducts that my DH said looked like something the dentist uses. Thy strapped DS down and the nurse held his head. He screamed a lot, but I would have too. His eyes already looked a little better by the time we left. We have to go back in 1 month to get them rechecked. DS will also have to have his eyes dialated at this appointment.

Re: Clogged tear ducts

  • I must have missed the original post but thanks for the update.  DD's 9 month appt is next week and we need to discuss this.  I didn't know this was a option I have only heard of surgery for it.  I have heard that it is so simple but your lo would have to go under anethesia, which really scares me.  Hope DS continues to do well, please let me know how is appt goes next month.

  • That was the impression I was under too so I kept putting off his appointment. I didn't want to put my baby under. They just did it in the office. It didn't even take 5 minutes to do both. He had stopped crying by the time he was back with me. I will post after his next appointment on 6/15.
  • Wow, i thought we had a problem with clogged ducts with ike, but thankfully it has cleared up on it's own.  I would have made my DH take ike, there's no way i could make it through what you described intact, i would melt, lol.  Glad everything seems to be clearing up!
  • Exactly why I sent DH while I sat in the other room. It was hard hearing DS scream. I even opened the door to try and find him.
  • Thanks for the information. Glad your little guy is ok! What Dr did you go to? I was referred to Dr. Leffler in Plano. I called his office to see if it was just a meet and greet/see whats going on or if they were going to actually do something since Plano is a bit of a drive from Sherman. The receptionist said just a see what is going on.

I hope that if he does need something done, it will be more like what happened with your DS, although the crying and screaming will suck. At least they didn't have to put him under. That is what I am afraid of! Luckily, it is only his left eye. Our appt is next week, so we will see how that goes. Thanks again for the update!

  • I am proud of you for having it taken care of. I would have never been able to sit there and listen to him screaming though. Glad they look better.
