Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I STILL have no luck with shoes HELP!

I have bought DS 4 pairs of shoes in the last couple of months.  He takes them off.  They fall off.  He LOVES opening the velcro.  I need shoes that will stay put.  I have Robeez, but the 12-18 months are too big and they fall off.  He takes off the pedi peds and the See Kai Run shoes.  He is not walking yet, but cruises all day, so I am not sure if I should get shoes that are soft, or with more structure.  I would love to get him some sandals, but at this point, I would settle for anything that STAYS ON!  Any suggestions?

  • Harm is like your DC... my best advice is only put shoes on him when you know he needs them (like we put them on in the parking lot of the park and not a moment before).  Also don't spend the money for expensive shoes... go cheap.  We just buy pairs at Walmart buy bulk... they stay on as well (which is hardly at all) and when one gets lost you are not crying any tears.  Harm loves his sandals that I get him there.

I love shoe shopping. So I'll see what I can find.

What about something like these. They look like they would be comfy and wouldn't be easy to pull off.

    These are cute too.

Stride Rite also has some cute boys sandals but they are pricey. DD only has one pair of Stride Rites and my mom found on them on sale at the outlet.

I must have completely ignored when you said that he liked to undo the velcro. I think all the ones I linked to have velcro.

  • Honestly, if he is just cruising around the house or something, let him go barefoot, especially this time of year. That goes from stroller time, too, so you don't have to worry about one getting lost while out walking.Kids have their best "grip" when they are barefooted anyway, so you are doing your "learning-to-walker" a favor.

And then when you go out, bring shoes with you and put them on him only when you need to.

Oh yeah, like the others said. We only put shoes on DD when she needs them. She will kick them off/pull them off in the stroller/car so I put them on her right before she'll be walking around.

  • DD has been walking for a few weeks, we haven't bought her shoes yet.  I figure that it's Spring, she doesn't need shoes when it's warm.  She has no problem walking on anything - concrete, wood chips, blacktop, grass.  We've decided it's not worth the fight.
  • Our DS just became an almost full-time walker about a week ago. We went to stride right and got him sandals with the velcro.  Yes they were a little pricey but like the PPs said we only put his shoes on if we are going out and he might be walking.  If we are in the house hes barefoot.  If we go to the grocery hes barefoot.  When hes got his shoes on in the car hes always playing with the velcro and hes able to get the shoes off.   Better off barefoot unless he needs his shoes on IMO.

  • For what it's worth, our pedi told us she didn't need to wear shoes for anything other than protection (ie like walking around outside).  We didn't hardly ever put shoes on until they requested at daycare.  And yes, the pedi also suggested Walmart shoes.....
