Audiology Screening - Older Baby

Has anyone had one? We had 2 when Marino was little but this is the more comprehensive test (we can't do it at our local hospital, we have to go to Georgetown). Just wondering what to expect and wondering if I will be in the room with him? I'm not concerned there is an issue - its just a formality b/c he had bacterial meningitis.

Re: Audiology Screening - Older Baby

  • Dominic had hearing tests at age 3 and 4 1/2.    We were in the room the whole time.   For the first one they would tell him to put a block in a bag everytime he hear a beep (it was through a speaker in the room).  they also did other stuff where the specialist would say a word and then ask him to repeat it.   It didn't work very well because Dominic hesitated over what he was supposed to do and sometimes missed a second beep because he was still putting the block in from the first one.   He came out with a result of moderate hearing loss.

My husband and I didn't really think the test was accurate so another one was done later.   The second time I was in the room and they had toys that moved and made noise.   They watched to see how quickly and accurately he looked for the toy.

For that one he was older and understood what to do so he came out with normal hearing results.

  • My son had one right around his 1st bday. It was actually entertaining because my son is so busy and he was supposed to react to the sound and turn toward the speaker where it came from - which he did but he was all over the place... I was with him the whole time... They first put a thing in his ear and got a computer read out of how his ear function - then we went to a booth where he was to look the way of the sound and the random barfing dog toy... Like I said, it made me laugh cause my son was everywhere.....
