I've been searching high and low for Dr. Browns 4 oz wide neck BPA free bottles and couldn't find them ANYWHERE. Well... now I know why. I finally got fed up and called Dr. Browns to find out if I could just directly order them from the company itself. I found out that they haven't even come out in stores yet. They will be here around the end of June - beginning of July in stores.
I have all of the 8 oz wide neck BPA free bottles, but newborns eat nowhere near 8 oz so I was all in a tizzy.
Re: Good info on Dr. Browns Bottles (wide necked)
Thanks for the info.
The wide neck reduces nipple confusion. I so badly want to try breastfeeding and apparently, when you introduce a standard bottle nipple (even if feeding breast milk) to the baby, it can confuse it (in some cases so much so that they don't want the breast after feeding with a silicone nipple).
The bottle is actually wider in general as is the neck (screw part) as well. The nipple collar for a wide neck wouldn't fit the standard 4 oz. But this would have been a good idea, had it worked. I didn't even think of doing that.
Ah, that makes sense. I saw both of them when we were registering but I didn't take the time to research and see what it was all about.
As far as the nipple confusion thing, I've heard so many mixed things on it. Some say if you introduce the bottle, the kid is sure to be confused, others say that in years of practice, they've never seen a case of nipple confusion and they think it's so exceedingly rare that it's not something to even really worry about.
Ah I see.
Now for a funny question regarding wide necked. I have heard of it, but haven't purchased them. So while wide necked is probably a good idea for some women in general....what if you have smaller boobs/nipples? lol I look at a regular bottle nipple and compare it to my own and think I'd probably confuse the baby by going with the wide neck. ha!
I'm ordering the 8 oz bottles anyway because a couple of comments on Amazon said that they found that their LO outgrew the 4 oz versions (of the narrow necks) so quickly that they thought they were a waste of money and recommended just getting the 8 oz up front.
This is definitely not something you need to worry about.
Your baby's mouth will form your breast into a certain shape in his or her mouth, and that shape is the same regardless of the size of your breasts.
From what I understand, nipple confusion comes mainly from the fact that babies have to work to get the milk from the breast, but it basically just comes right out with a bottle. They get used to not having to work very hard.
I HIGHLY recommend the book The Nursing Mothers Companion. It's an excellent resource on breastfeeding.
Thanks
