1st Trimester

Will I be showing?

I am a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding and I'll be 18 weeks.

I already have the dress (sigh). Any chance I can wear it?

It's not SUPER fitted around the tummy, but it's not particularly loose and flowing either. My mom just laughed when I told her I was planning on wearing it. :0

Pregnancy Ticker

Re: Will I be showing?

  • Everyone is different. It depends on a lot of things like the shape of your body, height, etc. That said, at 18 weeks I just started getting a tiny bump. Some women show earlier, some show later.

It's kind of hard to say... there is a lot of variation in when and how much people start to show.

I used to work at a maternity store and I saw every size and shape of pregnant lady you could imagine. You just never know!

  • this happened to one of my bridesmaids... she ended up having the inseam taken out a tad or as much as it would allow to give extra room. It all depends though, every pregnancy is different. They do sell body shapers that may give you an extra inch or two of room though. Good luck!
  • I was almost 17 weeks pregnant with my first at my wedding.  I was able to wear my wedding dress - a size 8 - without any issues and I was obviously pregnant.  Dress was a-line, not a lot of "give" in the middle.  You could tell that I was pregnant, but I didn't need alterations to make my dress fit, either.
  • My stomach is huge and I'm not quite 18 weeks.  It's permanently pushed out...it's a little gross sometimes.  Only when I lay down can I truly see my bump.

  • Unfortunately, there simply isn't a really good way to know at this point.  You might want to consider seeing if getting extra fabric is a possibility in the case you need an extra panel added. . .

  • Too Funny!!! I just dropped the bomb on my best friend. I'm going to be 18 weeks at her wedding and my bridesmaid dress is VERY fitted. I have a dropped waist size 0... Ugh.

Let me know how it works for you! Good luck!?

  • Everyone is different, but at 14 weeks, I've moved into maternity pants and as a co-worker said to me earlier this week, "It's starting to look like you have a baby in there."  I'm 5'1", though, so I don't know if being shorter makes me show earlier.

  • I'll be 17 weeks at my sister's wedding and I'm the MOH. I just ordered another dress a size up just in case. They can always take it in but you can't take them out very easily. Luckily the dress was only about a hundred bucks so I don't feel that bad about it. Good luck!
  • Look, it'll depend on how much weight you gain, how the weight distributes, how much bloating there is, whether you have a long torso or a short torso, the strength of your abdominal wall and simply how you, Jenny, carry a baby.  I have friends with real baby-looking bumps at 11 weeks and people who didn't show to the outside world until 28 weeks (though they could see massive differences and were more comfortable in mat clothes).

It sucks the dress is already paid for - but there may be ways to alter it.  You'll have a better idea a couple of weeks before the wedding. . .

  • You may or may not be.  Is the dress such that it could be altered if needed?

  • Every body type is different.

However, I am a bridesmaid next weekend in a wedding and I got laughed at in David's Bridal when I asked if I would be showing at 17.5 weeks.

SO GLAD I BOUGHT A MATERNITY STYLE DRESS INSTEAD!!!

I started showing between 14 and 16 weeks and today it is OBVIOUS. There is no way I would have been able to wear the normal dress at 17.5 weeks.

I would not have been able to wear it.  Everyone is different but take a look at my pics below.  The 1st pic I already had a bump at 17 weeks.

  • I went to a wedding where the bride herself was 5 months pregnant, and you really couldn't tell!  She hid it very well.

  • I worked in a bridal store in college and we were able to order extra fabric for all of the bridesmaid dresses that we carried.  The only thing is, that it sometimes took up to 6 weeks to get the extra fabric once it was ordered so you might want to consider just ordering some extra fabric now and then seeing what alterations need to be made as you get closer to the wedding.  If nothing else, you could always have the extra fabric made into a wrap or something if you don't need it for the dress and it's still cheaper than ordering a whole new dress.
