XP: BF'ing and being induced

I want to try to breastfeed and am being induced on Tuesday.

I know everyone is different as far as when milk comes in but, does having an induction delay your milk coming in? Does it even make a difference?

Even though they won't start the cervadil until tomorrow night, I'm getting pretty nervous about being induced, I'm not a c-section nazi but, I worry about ending up with one.

Re: XP: BF'ing and being induced

  • I was induced, and my milk took 5 days to come in. I have never heard of a correlation between the two. I also had cervadil and pitocin, and the contractions never got so bad that I needed pain meds. I ended up with a c-section because of failure to progress. as long as you have the baby on the breast asap, he/she will get plenty of colostrum which is the most important! I wouldnt worry too much about it! GL!

  • I don't think that would have any affect on when your milk comes in.  Your colostrum will come first, just make sure you put baby to breast often to stimulate your nipples.  Your milk will come in a few days after that (I think 3-5 days is average).  My milk came in on day 3, in the hospital.  Good luck!

  • My milk came in on day 3 after I was induced. We had no trouble BFing from the start. Good luck! I was nervous, too but it all went extremely well. Even with a large episiotomy and needing the vacuum, we avoided a C section and DD was healthy and perfect.
  • i was induced with pitocin and my milk came in around day 4... came in STRONG.  like porn boobs.

  • I dont think being induced makes a difference. My water broke on its own and Im on day 6 with NO milk. I think our milk just does what it wants!

I WASN'T induced and it took 5 days for my milk to come in.

  • I was induced with Pitocin and my milk came in on day 3.  Good luck with the induction (FWIW, my labor progressed quickly and easily and I wish you the same luck!)
  • I had a C-section and my milk came in on day 5 but never came in super strong/all at once so that led to some problems early on. Most important thing you can do is park that baby on your boob CONSTANTLY for a few weeks - literally - sometimes every hour (and don't let pedi or anyone else tell you different!) Your milk will come if your boobs get enough stimulation, you need that baby just to nurse, nurse, nurse. GL to you, not long now!! :-)

  • I wasn't induced, but needed pitocin to progress and my milk came in big time on day 3. DS was 6 pounds 15 ounces at birth and 10 pounds 2 ounces at his one month appointment, so I know my BF is going well!

  • I was induced, ended up having a c-section & my milk came in on time & we've had no problems w/ DS bfing.  I did ask to feed him as soon as I was able in the hospital.  good luck!!
  • Apparently inductions a C-sections can delay milk coming in... and I had both.  I had her on a Tuesday and my milk came in on Saturday.  Good luck!

  • I was induce and didn't realized I had milk until the LC showed me my breasts were so full on the third day. I didn't do cervadil though just pitocin. I didn't have any issues with my delivery despite being induced besides tearing. GL
