Misspelling "oops" - why so common???

I see people spell this word as "opps" all.the.time. It's not like it bothers me (okay, well, maybe on some level it does because I'm kind of a grammar/punc./spelling snob :)), I just don't get why it's so often misspelled like that.

Probably just an easy-to-make typing error or something, but it's odd to me nontheless.

That's all.

Re: Misspelling "oops" - why so common???

  • lol!!

why don't people sound things out?

  • Loading the player...
  • I see LOSE as LOOSE more than oops.  Oops might just be from typing too quick?  My mac has spellcheck (red underline) so I know if its wrong.  But it doesn't really bother me.  It's a message board, not an essay.
  • Yeah it doesn't bother you at all.... and you're the one making a post about it. haha

I don't really notice. ?Or care.?
  • However I do HATE when people misuse the "to" "too" and "two." ?Oh and don't get me started on "there" and "their." ?That ANNOYS ME.... obviously some people missed that lesson in school.?

Hey now, I did admit in the OP that it must bother me :)

  • My pet peeves are when people say "heaven cent" and "walla" instead of "voila". It's like nails on chalkboard..
  • A lot.  Enough said.

Yes! ?A LOT IS TWO WORDS! haha... and yes I forgot about your & you're.
  • Any adult saying "supposebly." That's just crazy to me.

And agreed on all of these! :)

It's a message board but that doesn't mean atrocious spelling and grammar don't annoy the fvck out of me.

  • As a former English teacher, I must also add that it annoys me to no end when people spell definitely like definately. Drives me crazy!

this reminds me of that episode on friends when joey learns that supposebly isn't a word, and he keeps using it in a sentence:

"they went to the zoo?"  "supposebly..."

  • Hooked on Phonics worked for me!

See, this is why it is confusing to me. Double vowels are a pretty hard rule to miss, right? That's why I'm thinking it may be an easy typing error to make or something...

Now I'm all scared to post anything without triple checking it so I don't put my foot in my mouth. :) I know that I've made dumb mistakes in the past from not checking. And I do know that this is just a message board, but I notice this many other places as well. It definitely does not keep me up at night, though. ;)

  • you know, it's a message board and people type fast, make typos - that's understanable - I've been guilty of it and I'm not the greatest speller in the world.  But it's the repeat offenders on the simple things that make me laugh.  I see the same people making the same stupid mistakes over and over again. Amazes me.

Thank you for saying what I was really thinking. :)

  • "opps" is a fast-typing error. I type way too fast, and that's a common one for me, there are a few typing mistakes I make a lot, can't remember what the other ones are though.

Ahhh....thank you! :) This has been on my mind for a while. (Okay, I admit it, it's been bothering me :))

  • LOL at the Friends reference.  It makes me think of "It's all a moo point.  You know, a cow's opinion."

  • The misuse of or lack of use of the nominative case is way worse.  Whenever I see  "Her and me went to the store."  I literally want to shout.

Augh!! She! He! They aren't such terrible pronouns!

I've never seen that one, but seriously LMAO!

  • I didn't read all the responses, so someone may have already mentioned this, but what drives me bonkers is 'prolly'.  Um, it's 'probably'.   Last I checked, 'prolly' wasn't even a word.

  • I have a big issue with less versus fewer, but now even commercials on tv use them incorrectly.

OMG yes! The one that really gets me is when people use "she and I" etc. for everything because they assume they are being smart by using "and I." For example, captioning a picture with "My mom and I." Just because it comes second doesn't mean it's "I," people! :)

People who write, "My mom and I" in such cases are the same ones who will say, "Me and her went to the store."

My heart is happy now. I love fellow grammar nuts.

  • back to the OP, i'm pretty sure that when people spell 'oops' as 'opps', most of the time they are poking fun at the original mistake.?

In a similar vein, farther vs. further bugs me.
