Parenting after a Loss

Can BFing cause constipation?

I've been really constipated since EC was born (which is the exact opposite from when I was pregnant).  At first I thought it was from the surgery but now I'm thinking its from breastfeeding.  Does anyone else have this problem?

And if you do - what are you doing to fight it?  I've been drinking extra water (at least 100 oz a day) and eating more fiber then your average woodchuck and lots and lots of fruit.  But its not working - any other suggestions?

Re: Can BFing cause constipation?

  • I have not had that problem, in fact I do better now than I did prior to pregnancy and during my pregnancy.

  • I don't BF but have been constipated since before Michael was born.  I seriously haven't been regular in over a year now.  I asked my OB and she said it just happens sometimes so I take Colace everyday and hope for the best.

  • I could see that - BFing is very dehydrating. ?I would say keep drinking water...more if you can.

I wasn't constipated though once I stopped the pain meds from my C-section.

  • I had the same problem for the first few months at least- probably because BF depletes your water supply.  I would drink as much extra water as possible and I also had to take dulcolax every now and again.
