I know the stupid duck commercials, but what exactly does it offer you in terms of maternity benefits?
I'm a teacher, and I get six weeks paid leave, and then I can use all my sick days that I have stored (about 3 months) as long as I have a doctor's note stating why (post-partum, etc).
What would Aflec do to supplement that?
Re: Aflec?
They pay you. I am not sure how much but it depends on if you have a csection, etc.
DH and I looked into this before we had DD. You have to be on the plan for 10 calendar months for coverage to kick in for pregnancy/maternity.
We were looking at a supplemental medical or hospitalization(don't remember which) and it would pay so much for a vag delivery and a bit more for a c/s. We also looked at a disability policy. It seemed like a decent plan and deal all together. When we looked at it, I was like 4 or 5 days from testing and had been trying for about 3 or 4 months. I knew that I was going to be KU because it would just be my luck to miss out on the plan. Sure enough.....
But...my medical insurance covers all of my birthing expenses. Would they still pay me on top of that?
I'll give them a call....I just hadn't heard of this before the Bump, and was curious.
Yes, they pay you on top of that. For example: regular insurance copay is 25.00. then Aflac reimburses you 7.00 per visit so for a dr.s visit you only pay $18.00 after all said and done.
Hospital stay is same way..they reimburse you your time and flat fee for procedures etc.
Aflac pays you for STD on top of what you get from your company or your state. You have to be enrolled and not give birth within the first 10 months of your enrollment so it's best to sign up prior to TTC because some babies do come early.
Just googled a bit and found this from another board:
On my last two babies I had AFLAC. I am able to plan my pregnancies, so I can sign up a month or two before I plan on getting pregnant and be covered for 10 months by the time I have my baby.
One thing is that I worked at least 30 hours a week, so the premiums were deducted from my paycheck. I assume you can just pay the premiums directly, but I'm not sure how that works exactly.
I signed up in January 2006, and this is how it worked for me related to pregnancy & delivery (I delivered in December 2006):
HOSPITAL CONFINEMENT POLICY with INITIAL HOSPITALIZATION RIDER:
Monthly Premium: $25.20
Benefits for me (there are other benefits, but this is what applied to me):
3 days in the hospital: $300 ($100 each day)
Rider (confined to hospital for 14 hours or more): $500
C-Section: $200
Wellness Benefit (After 12 months of paid premiums): $50 (6 week post-partum pap smear)
For 12 months:
Premiums = $302.40
Benefits = $1050
PERSONAL SICKNESS INDEMNITY PLAN with INITIAL HOSPITALIZATION RIDER:
Monthly Premium: $29.50
Benefits for me:
3 days in the hospital: $150 ($50 each day)
First day in hospital: $250
Rider (confined to hospital for 24 hours or more): $750
C-Section: $400
Physicians Visits: $60 (3 visits each calendar year at $15 a visit - I went 3 times in 1 year and 1 time in the next year)
For 12 months:
Premiums = $354
Benefits = $1610
SHORT-TERM DISABILITY (BASED ON A PERCENTAGE OF MY SALARY):
Monthly Premium: $32.50
Benefits for me:
8 Weeks Disability (allowed 8 weeks for a C-Section): $2123
For 12 months:
Premiums = $390
Benefits = $2123
ICU for the baby (I DIDN'T USE THIS):
Monthly Premium: $8.50
Benefit: $600 for each day in ICU (days 1-7) and $1000 for each day in ICU (days 8-15)
There may be other policies, but these are the policies that I used. I was covered by my employer's plan as well. My co-pay was $1200. So I paid $1200 to the hospital, and then AFLAC sent all of the above benefits to me directly. You can get these AFLAC policies regardless of other medical
insurance.
Also, you can cancel the policy after you have the baby and then sign up again within two years at the same premium rates that you were paying before.
