Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Those whose babies were 9lb+ at birth

Are your babies still big? Just curious.

DD was 10lb 9oz (97th percentile) and 21" (95th percentile). She was then a slow gainer.  Her head has always been in the 50th percentile. The doctor said she may have not been meant to be that big and her head may tell the truth.

At six months, she was 16lb 4oz (54th) and 27.5" (95th).

Re: Those whose babies were 9lb+ at birth

  • DS was 8lbs 19oz at birth, and at this pulm appt April 15 he was 25lbs 5oz, so yea he has always been big. haha

  • DS was 9lbs. 4 oz. & 22 inches at birth.  His 9 month check up he was 21 lbs. 12 oz. (60%), 29 1/2 inches (80%), head was 49 3/4 cm (70%).
  • My guy is a peanut (5lbs 12oz at birth and 14lbs 7oz at 6 months), but my pedi said that birth weight has nothing to do with what their size will be later in life.  He said after 6 months is when they start to head toward the size (percentage wise) that they are genetically predisposed to be.
  • My DS was 8 lbs 9 oz and he is currently 22ish pounds.  He is 75% for weight and height and his head is 90%.

So, yeah, he is a big boy.

(Remember also, that boys and girls have different growth charts :o)

  • I cannot believe you had a vaginal birth?!?! Poor you!!!

  • DD wasn't 9+ but she was 8lb 14oz and 20 inches.  She has yet to doublle her birth weight at 6 months.  She weighs about 15lbs and is 26 inches long.  She's pretty petite.  It's funny how she started out so big and now is on the smaller side.  Pedi just said that my placenta must have been working really well.

It was actually a choice i made.  I knew the baby was big and I could have had a c-section, but I am tall and my OB said she would work with me to see if it could happen.  Sometimes I am proud and sometimes I think I was crazy!:)

I expect DD to double her birth weight around 10 or 11 months!

  • (Holy big baby!!)

In terms of weight, DS was 95% at birth, 90% 2 weeks later, 70% at 2 months, 50% at 4 months and 10% at 6 months.

His height has always been 90-95%.

Pedi thinks he's just going to be a tall, skinny boy.

Is she BF or FF?  This, I've heard, makes a difference.  Also, just like adults, babies come in all shapes & sizes and the only thing to "worry" about is if she's gaining, not necessarily how.

  • DD was 9lbs 5oz(96%) and 22 inches(99%) at birth!  She's 7 months today as she's very petite - very long and very lean.  At 6 months, she was 16lb 1oz (54%) and 27.25 inches (93%) - she had just gotten over bronchiolitis and wasn't eating much for a few weeks because prior to getting sick she was 16lbs 9oz.

My DS was 9lbs 3oz and 21 1/2 inches when he was born. He was a chunky baby but then thinned out.  He's 3 1/2 now and very skinny as well.

They certainly did NOT get it from me!!

I was super stressed about her slow gaining for the first few months. I was BF and had some issues. Now I am totally laid back.  She is doing great and I hope she stays tall and slender! :)  I was just curious since some friends with big babies saw their babies continue to track on the large side.

  • DD was 8.12 at birth and 21.5" long. At her 6 month appt she was 27lbs and 27.5 inches long, she is off the charts in everything..
  • Yup. He's 23 lbs & 31" (he was 9lb 1oz & 21.5" at birth).

And I know he's big because everyone's reaction is usually "Wow....he's BIG!" when I tell them he's 9 months old.

I'm a little worried he's going to get a complex...

  • My DS was 9lb 2oz and 22" at birn and was 17lbs 10oz (50%) and 27.25" (50%) at his 6 month apt.
  • DD was 8 lbs 14 oz and 21" at birth

Shei s 97th for height and 95th for weight and I think 98th for head circumfrence lol!

  • My son was 9lbs 4oz. He is HUGE. He was 22lbs 12oz at 7 months, his head and length are way off the charts.

  • ds was 10lb 6oz at birth, and has stayed off the charts. His 9 month appt. was yesterday & he's 25lbs and 30.5 inches tall.
  • Nope.  DS was 10lbs 8oz at birth and at one point was up to almost 19lbs but tomorrow is his one year bday and he is back at 16lbs 11 oz.   *sigh*

    He is tiny...

  • Nope..he grew 5 inches in the first 2 months and really thinned out. Now he is just tall and thin, but very healthy =)

  • Nope, my DS isn't big anymore. At birth my DS was 9lbs 2oz (85%) and 21"(90%). He has also been a slow gainer and at 9 months he was 19lbs 2oz (25%) and 28"(40%). I am 4'11" and my DH is 5'8", and my mom said I was in only 3% when i was a baby, so we were surprised I had such a big baby. I'm pretty sure where he is on the charts now is where he should be.

  • DS was 8lb 12oz and 20 1/2 inch at birth at his 6 month appointment he was 23.5 pounds 27.5 inches and i can't remember the size of his head. But he's always been in the 97th percentile for everything.
