Dh puts PB in the fridge too, I tell him it's impossible to spread when he does that. He's finally complying. My mom puts syrup in the fridge, even though it says on the bottle, no refridgeration needed.
As far as non food items in the fridge... I once had to take "feces samples" when my DS was sick and had to refrigerate them. Thank goodness for the smell proof containers they provide.
As far as food items. At work I have seen one too many "science projects" forming from people not tossing their year old foods. Yuck!
I agree with the PB ordeal. it does not belong in the fridge.
My BFF and her H were getting paid to do some medical testing and in their freezer were pads they had to wear in the armpits so capture sweat (no lie).

I do that too. I think I do it because my parents always did, so it was just habit.

My mom puts nail polish in the fridge.? Apparently it helps keep it longer.
We've put batteries in the freezer before.? It supposedly helps recharge them a little.
We've had people tell us we're weird because we put our bread in the fridge.
We keep our bread in the fridge. If we don't it molds faster than the two of us can eat it. DH actually prefers to keep it in the freezer, but I don't like my bread toasted and if it's frozen that's the only way you can eat it.?
?I also keep peanut butter in the fridge, but it's because I prefer the "natural" kind that says refrigerate after opening on it.?
I did once participate in a research study that required me to keep vials of my own saliva in the fridge for a week or so. ?
