My views on IUDs were a little biased before pg (my DH was conceived while MIL had one!) but I decided to research, just so I wasn't going off of their experience alone. Supposedly, the failure rate is very low...but I've heard enough failure stories lately that it concerns me. Add to that that I'm not psyched about having something in place that I couldn't stop at a moment's notice: it was so convenient to go off the pill when we decided to TTC, that I think I would miss that flexibility.

So, unless something happens to drastically change my mind, it looks like it's going to be the mini-pill + condoms while I'm BF-ing...?

  • I had Paragard. It does increase how much you bleed every month, by quite a bit actually - at least it did for me. I loved that I never had to worry about if I was pregnant and never had to remember to take the pill or ruin a moment with my love by finding the condoms. However, i was one of the rare cases to develop an allergy to copper and had to have it removed after a little over a year. Having it removed was not at all painful or a big deal though. You just call up your obgyn and tell her/him that you want to have it removed. No biggie. I wish I could use it because the extra blood every month was so worth it!!!

Definitely Mirena. ?The failure rate is about as low as you can get (it can fail, but so can getting your tubes tied). ?I had one before I got pregnant and I loved it. ?Only had to check the strings once a month, rarely had a period. ?It is uncomfortable to get put in and I bled/spotted for 2 weeks after and sometimes felt a twinge of pain for the first few weeks, but then after that it was the best birth control I had tried. ?I have hormone-sensitive migraines and it never gave me any trouble.

?I've heard the paraguard causes more bleeding/cramping, but I've never tried it.

  • I have to use the mini-pill (progesterone only) pill because of a blood clotting disorder. ?I will be on that until I am done BFing and then get a hormone free IUD. ?This is our 2nd baby, but we are not 100% that this is our last DC.
  • Had paragard, got it Jan of 2006 after my second, I would go 45 to 60 days until mynext cycle and when it came it was painful and lasted long and heavy. Had it removed Oct 24 2008 cycle came on the 26 and look a me now preggo with baby numer three... LOL, this times around problem want use nothing.
