Babies: 0 - 3 Months

please help- last questions on ferber

We are at our wits end and have decided to sleep train our LO this weekend. She needs to be held or rocked for naps and bedtime with a paci most of the time till she is in a deep sleep. I used to not care, until she hit 5 months and getting her back to sleep can take an hour between 3-4AM. when it was easy- pop in paci and leave, i didnt care. Now, its insane.

So, I tried the other night to put her down awake and big fat fail due to her throwing up.

We will be starting this tomorrow night and sticking with it no matter what. My questions are:

If I cut out paci at bedtime- do I get rid of it all day and totally- i think it helps with her teething.

anyone else's LO cry so hard they threw up? it was horrible but I know it can happen.

Can i just start with the nighttime first and then work on naps or is that mixed messages?

Any help would be great- i read all the books but I am not totally clear on some things.

    Some tips for you:

    1. You don't have to get rid of the paci altogether.  You just want to form a new sleep association.  You want her to learn to soothe herself to sleep and not rely on the paci.

    2. Try putting your DD to bed an hour later than usual and don't let her nap after 4pm.  This should make her tired enough to go down faster.

    3. Naps and night sleep are different. They can distinguish the two.  Work on nights first and the naps will come. Pick your battles for now.

GL and let m,e know if you have any other questions.

  • We didn't cut out the paci all together but she has kind of weaned herself of it but still uses it a daycare.  We have the night time sleep down after doing CIO but are still working on naps.

Good luck!  It is hard but worth it.  DD used to be a lot like your little one and now night time has become so much more enjoyable.  Once in awhile she'll still cry (but more like a whiney cry) after we put her down for about five minutes and then will be out.  I think it's helped her sleep longer at night as well.
