Mom groups/activities in Va?

My H returns to work next week and I am trying to plan on things I can do so that I am not in the house 24-7. These last 2 weeks being home has really exacerbated baby blues. Anyway, what kinds of groups or activities did you/are you doing with baby?

  • I  didn't really do much at the point that you are at.  I very occasionally ran errands.  I didn't want to expose DS to too much before he started getting his vaccines.

  • Try joining My Gym. They started programs for really young kids so check them out. DD has been going since she was 6 months old and is now over 3 years old. She loves it and has made some good friends there.

DH takes her on the weekend since we both work but there are classes all week long.

We go to the one in Kingstowne. Not sure if there are others closer to you. I?m not a big fan of Gymboree (little too hokey for me) but there are tons of those around Alexandria.

Also, look into classes through the Fairfax County Parks and Recreation. They have a ton of classes all over Fairfax County including Mommy and Me and they are cheap.

  • You can find them everywhere- meetup.com, the gymboree types of places, fairfax co, parktakes. but to be honest, i wouldnt do anything for a while. your baby is so young, i would just enjoy this time because although it may not seem it to you right now, it flies by. plus, your LO hasnt had any vaccinations yet. you will have plenty of time to get out of the house and interact with others. you are lucky having a baby in the spring...go for walks, to the mall, coffee shop etc. someplace where you wont be in too close contact with germs.

  • Where in NOVA are you?

Honestly, I didn't do much when DS was that young.  I got out and walked once or twice a day, and went to the store if he was being particularly good.  I'm now part of a few moms groups and have met some people, so we have small playdates and such.

I also take DS to the library once a week.

I agree, I did not expose either DD to other kids before 8 weeks.

I took walks and met friend for coffee and had friends come over. Went shopping alone...

  • Thanks for the info ladies. You all make a great point. I think I am just very concerned about staying busy and getting out of the house so that I don't go crazy. In all seriousness, I am trying to make sure the baby blues I have now doesn't turn into something more serious. But, I don't want to jeapordize my baby girl. Thanks again!!

Def mention it to the Pedi or Ob whoever you see first. Get out and get some sun. Maybe do something fun for yourself like a Pedi or whatever floats your boat. And see friends.
  • I think visiting with people is a great way to feel like you're "doing something" each day when baby is really young like that.  So you're not out and about exposing them to the world's germs, but you're still getting some stimulation.  While on mat. leave if I have a day where I have nothing scheduled (and I want to ignore my giant "to do" list) I usually just go to my neighbor's house or to my parents' house with my baby.  It gets me out of the house, they love seeing her, and often I get a free meal out of it.  Smile  For me, contact with people is what I crave and what keeps me feeling like I'm still part of the human race.

  • On Wednesdays, VHC has a weekly BFing support group and also a New Parent group and PPD group that alternate every week.  Nice opportunity to get out of the house and talk to other new moms.

Going for a walk does wonders for putting you in a good mood and healthy for you too.

We also did Baby Yoga, but I recommend your baby be minimum 8 weeks old.
