what if your water broke at WORK?!?

So I was thinking about this last night after the dr. told me it could be any day now... I work in a very small office with all guys... how awkward would that be...

"um, excuse me, boss man, could you please drive me and my wet ass over to the hospital?"

HAHA... I think I might skip out on my last two days of work next week to make sure I avoid that situation - ya know, just in case

  • This was a girl I worked with biggest fear! She's a teacher and she was so worried it was going to happen in front of the students! Thank goodness it didn't! I hope yours doesn't break at work either!

  • Well, if it makes you feel any better, when my water broke, it was just a trickle over many hours - I honestly wasn't even sure it was my water breaking because it was so light.

It happened in my school two years ago.  Luckily the kids had left for the day already!
  • Mine broke at work and it wasn't bad....It started trickling very slowly.  My coworkers didn't even know until I told them.
  • I wanted my water to break at work... mostly because I thought it would be funny because everyone would freak out... then they would have to get my chair cleaned lol Big Smile

  • This was my worst fear. Even talked about it in childbirth classes.  I told everyone that if it did, I would have to resign from total embarrasment.  Guess what... my water broke at work!  It was not what I thought it would be. No big splash, but a steady trickle. I had just arrived at work and thought I had to pee.  Not!  Would not stop coming. So, I walked to my office, picked up my laptop, told my assistant that I was headed to the hospital, stopped by and told my boss I was in labor and left. By the time I got to the parking lot, my shoes were totally full of water.  Drove myself to the hospital (sitting on a towel that I thankfully had in the trunk) and called my DH. It was  a total surprise, as I was only 36 weeks.  Baby J was born at 9:28pm on New Year's Eve!
  • For a lot of people, someone in the hospital actually breaks it for them.

Mine broke while on the toilet at home - pretty much an ideal situation.  It just felt like I needed to pee, but when I stood up after thinking I was done, it felt like I needed to pee again right away.  I didn't develop contractions, so I would have been able to drive myself if I needed to.  If you're really worried, keep some pads (nice for absorbing any leaking post-breaking), a spare pair of underwear, a loose skirt you can change into, and a towel to sit on to drive yourself home.  Odds are that it won't happen at work... but if it does, everyone will understand!

Ok, I'm a CPA, so excuse the dorkiness of this comment - but that is the IDEAL time to have a baby from a tax perspective!  You get the 2008 deduction with minimal expense for actually taking care of the dependant child.  Way to go!

  • This happened to my friend.  She was running a meeting and excused herself because she felt weird.  Went to the bathroom, it broke, she was stranded.  Someone came in the bathroom and she asked for help and they turned around and WALKED OUT and left her there until someone else came in. !!!

  • I drove around with 2 towels in my car for weeks with the fear mine would break in public somewhere.

It ended up breaking in bed at home!

  • This was so my fear too.  It broke at 6 am in the morning when I was asleep.  It was a big gush and there was meconium in the fluid - totally freaked me out but DD was just dunzo & ready to arrive and scored 9 and 9 on apgars.

    See you here soon though!

  • For me it would have been just fine if my water had broke at work since I work for an OB office. I figured that it would have been the best "public" place for it to happen. My office mate was really worried that it was going to as she thought that it if it happened that it would gush everywhere and that she would get wet too. However it broke at home.
  • This.

I had just finished peeing and when I stood up, there was a little trickle down my leg and at first I thought I was still peeing, but it kept happening, so I call the doc and she said it was my water breaking.  I was totally expecting a huge gush of water though.

This is what happened to me.  Once I got to the hospital and I was in bed, the nurse came in to check on me and that is when the majority of the fluid gushed out.  In the beginning it was just a trickle.

  • I was 38.5 weeks, had a long contraction and decided to leave work a little early. As soon as I got to my car and sat down my water broke. They were trickes and small gushes though (not one huge one), so I was ok. I sat on my jacket, called my doctor - they said to go to the hospital within the hour, called my husband, coworkers. etc.

So I drove myself to the hospital! Yes I was having contractions, but they weren't terrible. You still **usually** have plenty of time before baby is ready to come out even once your water breaks.

ETA: actually I went home first and grabbed the hospital bag and fed the dogs. lol. my house is close to the hospital though.

  • I used to work in a clean room and a very young girl had her water break and didn't even know what was happening.  Thankfully one of the older ladies helped her out of the cleanroom and called her family to come get her and take her to the hospital.  The poor girl had a lot of water and was a mess since she didn't know and couldn't really check it out in our work enviroment.

  • Mine broke at our newborn care class we were attending. I wasn't sure if that's what happend because it felt like I peed my pants.  I slowly leaked then and you really couldn't see it (it didn't leave a puddle or anything).  Fortunatley we were at the hospital I was delivering at so they took me upstairs to make sure that it was my water that broke.

  • That would be pretty embarassing. When mine broke the 2nd time, it was a huge gush all over the floor. Literally it looked like gallons of water came pouring out. The first time it was just a slow gradual trickle over about an hour.

Not me! I never went into early labor. No dilating, nothing.  I went from nothing to water breaking, and then immediate crazy intense contractions.  By the time I got to the hospital I was 6 cm already.

  • My water broke at work in the bathroom. A coworker walked in and I had her give me some pads thinking that would help enough for me to pack up my desk and drive to the doctor's office. HA! I got as far as the break room and my jeans were soaked. I had to walk through the office with soaked pants. At that point, I didn't really care..I was just so excited that things were happening.
  • I would have gotten in a cab to go to the ferry to the hospital.  But my water broke at home & there was no trickle for me just huge GUSHES

  • That was my big fear!  I teach K and did not want to have to explain that to a bunch of 5 year olds...and let me tell you, when my water broke (at home thankfully), it was a LOT!
