Ohio trying to pass new tanning law

It would require anyone under 18 to get a prescription to tan (in a tanning bed) from their Dr.  That is genius IMO.  What kind of Dr would really write a prescription for a teen to tan.  I wish this law would have been around when I was a teen and being tan for prom was a huge priority.

  • If that had been around when i was in school I don't think I would've of been the whitest girl.
  • Despite the fact that I don't have tanning issues (thanks, year-round brownness!), I'm in love with this law.  It's brilliant.
  • That's a great idea. It is crazy how many teens bake themselves in a the tanning bed after school without their parents knowing. (Note to self, if child comes home orange in the middle of winter, check into it) It causes cancer, just like cigarettes, and should be regulated IMO.

I also agree that I certainly would not have been the whitest girl in school. Sadly, I was, lol. Oh wait, I still am!!!! LOL.

Ha, me neither, I was pale as pale can be. ?Well maybe when I am 80 I will look 40.
  • Yes

Now they need to do that for Adults as well.

  • I have never tanned, nor will I.

    BUT...

I've actually had a doctor suggest tanning to help with my rheumatoid arthritis.  The heat from the lamps supposedly helps w/ joint pain.

    BUT...

I have lupus, and tanning/constant sun exposure can cause the disease the flair up (not to mention the risk of skin cancer).

Tanning is a no go for me.  I'll stay white any day.

  • IDK, I think that's kind of fascist.  The gov. shouldn't be telling people whether or not they can use tanning beds.  And I'm kind of sick of teenagers being babied into this extended adolescence- at 16 and 17 you should be mature enough to make responsible choices and it should be your parents and not the government that vetos when you make a bad choice.

This is from someone who thinks tanning beds are one of the stupidest inventions ever, doesn't get why people in a still race biased society pre-judge others with "darker" skin and then turn around and try to make themselves darker, and has never and will never step foot in a tanning bed herself.

  • That's an awesome law, haha!  I went to high school with a ton of tanorexics, but I always held to the Victorian belief that pale was beautiful.  Fortunately I found a husband that thinks the same thing Smile

My husband has the nice Mediterranean perma-tan, I hope he passes that down to at least one of our kids, our DS came out as pale as me!

I think 16 and 17 years old don't think about all of the consequences.  Maybe I was old enough by that age to understand the risks, but I did not really realize what a dangerous thing I was doing.

But it is your parent's job, not the governments to help you make that decision!  This is another infringment by the government into citizens personal lives.  It is the principal of the matter- you let this one go and who knows what they'll want to regulate next.

As a parent, I'm not stupid.  If my daughter has been hitting the tanning bed, I'm going to notice and I am going to talk to her about it- that is my right and hers!

  • As vehemently anti-tanning as I am, I do not think it should be a doctor's choice. That is really bordering on being invasive. I do think that a minor should have to be accompanied by a legal guardian, however.

On a side note, tanning has benefits for people with psoriasis. The UV rays, in conjunction with medications, help clear it up.

  • While I don't think tanning beds are a great idea, I just think it's a little ridiculous that we now need a law to control this.

I used to buy 3-5 sessions each winter, around February, because the dreary weather just got to me and I'd start to get depressed. This is embarrassing, but I'd slather on sunscreen (I know, waste of money) and go lay in the bed for 10 minutes. It made a world of difference with my mood, I usually went in the morning so it got that serotonin pumping and woke me up for the day, and even going once a week without hardly any change to my skin color, I felt warmer through the rest of the frigid winter. I think my method of battling SAD was better than popping pills (I think this country is pill crazy and it's ridiculous to me that people are now PROUD that they take antidepressants..).

All that said, I don't think the law is a bad thing, necessarily, but I don't know how it's going to make a difference.. Parents already sign the papers for their underage kids- I doubt the law will stop these girls from getting what they want. Their mothers will just drag them from doctor to doctor until someone writes the scrip.

They were trying to get a law passed in Florida where minors had to be accompanied by a guardian.  I'm not sure if it passed.

Many parents just dont do thier jobs, or thier kids just blow them off and go do it anyway.  Like Amy said, they do not think of the consequences.  Or the parents dont see the big deal either.  This isnt much unlike cigs.  Both cause cancer, and any cancer is serious.  Should we leave parents up to deciding if thier children can have cigs too?

The government is at a lose lose.  If they do nothing, they are letting thier citizens kill themselves.  If they do something, they are trampling on the rights of thier citizens to kill themselves.

  • Unfortunately, I'm sure a few of them would write a prescription. The only time I tanned when I was in h.s. was when I went to the prom.

I've only tanned a few more times, but I get claustrophobic.

I should note that I don't do it anymore- as an adult I can deal with my mood and control my emotion through the winter.

This might be a good medium.  Especially considering not everyone has health insurance, so they would have to pay the doctor just to let them tan.

So what do you propose?  We allow the government to take babies away at birth and raise them for us b/c there are so many bad parents?  There has to be a line that the gov. can't cross or we lose all of our rights.

And stopping teenagers from going to tanning beds isn't going to stop people from dying of melanoma.  If they can't get to the beds, they'll just lay out directly in the sun.  Are we going to let the gov. roam beaches and lake fronts forcing anyone under 18 to slap on SPF 45?

It would require anyone under 18 to get a prescription to tan (in a tanning bed) from their Dr.  That is genius IMO.  What kind of Dr would really write a prescription for a teen to tan.  I wish this law would have been around when I was a teen and being tan for prom was a huge priority.

I've never even heard of a tanning salon that allows minors to tan without their parents coming in to sign a waiver. So while this is still good, because some parents don't care, it's not like minors can just walk into a tanning salon & hop into a bed. Plus some doctors WILL prescribe tanning to sick people. i.e. 2-3 minutes in the lowest level bed every other day. The vitamin D is good for you!

I went tanning like once when I was underage. All they did was make me take home a waiver for my parents to sign. I forged my moms signature and went to tan.

I don't necessarily agree with this law but I would like to see something done. I like what one PP said about the legal gaurdian having to be present for someone underage to tan.
