XP: How many Emily-s do you actually know?

I can't stop thinking baby names! Ugh. I should stop until we find out what we're having, but I can't help it LOL

I absolutely love the name Emily and it's one of the few DH and I can agree on. But I hate that it's been the #1 girl name for the past 10 years or so! Top 10, top 5 even, I could deal, but #1 every single year.... ugh.

But then I think about it... I used to teach elementary school (5th grade) and I never had an Emily in my class. Then I taught junior high for a year (so had many many more students) and again, I never once came across an Emily. I know 2 adults whose name are Emily. And that's it.

Regional thing maybe? How many kids/adults do you know named Emily?

I know 1 Emily.  I know several "Ella"s.  That seems to be a more popular name here.

  • I live in Michigan and I can count 9 Emily's that I know. But only 1 of them is under the age of 5.
  • none.  I think you should go with it if you love it - but then my DD's name is Michelle, so clearly I don't have a problem with common names. Smile
  • I have a cousin named Emily and I work in pediatrics so I see alot of girls names but i can tell you off the top of my head i maybe have 2 patients w/the name Emily.. I think it's very pretty!
  • From school, work, and church. I have known about 20 through the years. But I don't think I ever knew more than 2 or 3 at a time. Currently in my workgroup of 15 there are two Emilys.

  • I personally know kids named Emily but I don't have any adult friends named Emily.
  • Hmmm, I've been thinking for a while and the only one I can come up with is my friend's 4yo DD.  I went to HS with a girl who went by Emily, but her real name was Amelia. Oh, a friend of mine from HS married an Emily, but I've never met her.  I'm sure there have been others, but they don't stick out.

Ditto - also know a lot of "Emma"s too but Just 1 Emily...but really it's all about the name you like.

Our son is Jack which is common these days but I can't imagine him w/another name.

  • I can't think of a child named Emily. I love it too and have tossed it around if we have a girl.

Apparently, all the Emily's are living in NY.  I see and hear it all the time.  There are 3 or 4 in my son's daycare (in several different classes).  I know about 10-12 adults named Emily.   Now there are Ellas, Emmas, Emmalines and other off-shoots.  It's out of control- but it is a really nice name so I understand the popularity.

  • I know 2 Emilys.  Both are adults.  I only remember having one student named Emily when I was teaching.  I think it's a great name!
  • 1.  Come to think of it, I never had an Emily in grammar school or high school in my class.

  • I graduated with an Emily and there is one Emily in my son's class at daycare. She's cute - the name is very traditonal but pretty nonetheless! I feel your pain. I've aways wanted to name my daughter Isabel after my grandma but I can think of 4 right off the top of my head. But you have to do what you love - if you love it then own it! :)

  • I know 4, but most of them are my age (20's). I love the name also- go for it if you love it!
  • Thanks! That makes me feel a little better about possibly using that name :)

But where are all the Emilys if it's been the #1 name for so long?!? LOL I don't get it :)

I know 2 and they're both adults.  Great name.  I love it, too.

That's funny because I grew up in MI and knew tons of Emilys. And the one Emily I know now also grew up in MI, even though we live in CO now. LOL.?

  • I absolutely love the name Emily too.  I don't know any children with that name.  I do know a couple of adults with that name, but I don't think it matters how many adults have that name.  Then again, I named my son William.  LOTS of adults have that name, and it is supposedly in the top 10 on the baby name list.  I don't know any other 1 year old Wills in Colorado though.

  • I can think of 7 Emily's that I know but only one is under 5.
  • I'm a teacher at a small school (2 classes in each grade level k-8). We have 6...ironically there are 2 in each class Kinder, 3rd & 5th...must be a 'year' thing...

The name is beautiful though, that's why it's so common!

  • Bim- I love the name Emily and it was on our girl list before DS was born.  It is popular, but I think Emma ( which is a different name) is more so now.

I only know 7 Emilys and they span from 2 to 30 years old.  One in my DH's family and 2 that I went to school with.  One I worked with.

I say go fot the name you love.

  • About 15, in all honesty maybe more.  It is the #1 name for a reason.

I know 2 Emily's.  I have co-worker named Emily and my SIL just named her baby Emily.

  • I can't think of anyone I know named Emily - it's my DD's middle name though :-)  Pretty name, I say!
  • My name is Emily.  I only went to school with one other Emily in my grade, and there was 1 in the grade below me.  One of the girl's at DD sitter is named Emily.  My cousin named their child Emma Lee.

  • Just me, and DH's cousin.  Oddly enough for the past 5 years we have had the same FIRST and LAST names.

     Stick out tongue

  • Just me, DH's cousin and DH's cousin's friend (9 yo).

Oddly enough, the cousin is getting married the day after our 5 year anniversary and since I got married we have had the same first and last name.s

  • This post was fun for this Emily to read :o)

It's a very common name, supposedly, but I don't know any children named Emily. Emma...that's a different story.

    Name her Emily :o)

  • Oh no!  We switched our girl name from Emma to Emily because we thought that Emily was less popular than Emma.  I didn't realize that Emily was that popular.  I think around here Emma is much more common, especially in very young children.  I do know 4 teenage girls named Emily, but I'm a teacher so I see a lot of kids.

I think we'll still go with Emily.

  • Just my Emily!

We almost didn't name her that because of the popularity issue, but we don't know any other Emilys and it really was the only name we ever agreed on for her.

If you love it, use it!

And FWIW, I think Kylie and Emily sound beautiful together.

  • There are 14 infants in DS's daycare class and 3 of them are named Emily.  I also know a 3 year old girl named Emily.

I know one adult named Emily and she is in her mid-30s.

I don't know if it is a regional thing, but we live in Massachusetts.

  • If you like it, use it.  I have one of the most common names ever and kid about it being a pain but really I could care less... it's a beautiful name.  Much better than being the only Frindlesniker in the class or some other crazy name that people make up just to be different.
