Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I need middle of the night feeding advice

DD is ff. She takes 4 oz every 3 hours. After her 1st feeding before bed she goes 5.5 hours which is great since she is only 4 weeks old. Some nights she wakes after 5.5 hours and I try to feed her. She eats about 1.5-2 oz before she falls asleep. Then she is back up an hour and a half later to eat again and we repeat eating a little and falling asleep. Any suggestions? Should I up her ounces before I put her down for the night?

  • We upped our LO's oz. before putting him down and he sleeps much longer now.  Usually when he gets up the second time he'll house a 5 oz bottle and sleep for a good 4.5 - 5 hours before waking again...he'll eat 2 - 4 oz in that feeding and last for another 3 hours or so before being up for the morning.

  • When B was 4 weeks old he was eating about the same.  I was giving him 5 ounces before bed though, then he get up and take another 4 ounces.  I never had a problem with him falling asleep but I also wouldn't rock him until the last ounce, and made sure I burped him about 3 times during the bottle.  If he looked like he was going to fall asleep I would change his diaper.  After he ate I would lay him back down and then he was good until morning.
  • I burp her alot because she spits up quite a bit and it doesnt keep her awake. I usually change her diaper 1st maybe ill change that up. I think Ill try upping her ounces tonight. I go back to work on monday and more slee would be great!
  • DD is EBF, but her sleep pattern is similar to your DDs. She eats for a while before we go to bed, and then sleeps 5-6 hours. She usually wakes up at 3am, eats quickly and goes back to sleep until 5am. Eats quickly again then back to sleep until 7am. So, I imagine that she's getting 5 or 6 ounces at the first feeding, and then 2-3 at the 3am and 5am. I've talked to a lot of othe rmoms, and I think it's a pretty normal sleeping/feeding pattern until about 4 or 5 months when (in theory) they eat more at each feeding and drop one of those nighttime feedings.
