DD is screaming her head off!!!

DH is trying to give her a bottle and she is absolutely refusing it.  I've been exclusively breastfeeding with the occasional bottle here and there but we're trying to train her take a bottle for when I go back to work in a few weeks.  Any suggestions?  We've tried Playtex Drop Ins, Dr. Browns (which worked last week), and Born Free.  I'm "hiding" in the other room so she can't see or hear me.

  • maybe try stepping outside for a while to see if that helps?

  • Would she take the bottle from you? That can narrow down the problem to having issues with the bottle vs getting fed by someone other than you. Also, you may want to try again tomorrow since she's so upset right now. Try feeding her when she's hungry but not too hungry (I know that can be hard to tell, we spent a month trying to teach DS to take a bottle). As pp said, I've heard it may be easier when you're outside of the house. And I would try the drop-ins again, their nipple seems a bit slower than others so that may help.

  • She won't take a bottle from me either.  DH tried giving her a bottle earlier today when I went to the gym and she also refused it.  We'll keep trying.
  • When we were going through this, we ended up trying every single day for a month. DS would eat .5oz, then 1oz and it was hard. DS definitely preferred the wide nipples. And I fed him since I had more time than DH. Have you tried putting a clean finger in his mouth for him to start sucking on and then quickly replacing it with the bottle? Also, I used the bottle in the afternoon instead if firast thing in the morning or at night since he was less hungry and more pliable. Good luck, I hope she takes the bottle soon.

  • I had to "bait and switch" DD for awhile.  I'd put her on the breast for a minute, then pop her off and give her the bottle.  It didn't always work, but it helped a ton.  Good luck!

Great, now you scared me.  I just hopped on to post about this.  My DD also refuses a bottle, but I am going to work for a bit on Friday for the first time, so she will have a feeding without me.

We only have the Play-tex Ventaire, and every time we've practiced it's been a disaster.  Any suggestions on bottle nipples that imitate the breast well?  One of my DD's major issues seems to be a quick gag reflex.

  • DD has this problem.  We've been trying to give her a bottle since she was one week old.  We tried Playtex Drop-Ins and that was hit or miss.  She took from an Avent once but never again.  She hated the Nuk bottles.  Finally we tried the Breastflow bottle made by The First Years.  It seems to work the best.  DH fed her twice this weekend and I fed her once.  Today my sister fed her once and so did DH.  She won't take it every time, but definetly more than any other bottle.  We're trying to give her two feedings everyday with it in hopes she will get used to it.

  • I know that some babies just refuse to take nipples. You are going to have to just play around and see which nipple works for your baby. My baby took any nipple and i honestly think would drink out of a straw...ha ha ha! Doesn't help you though.  maybe take a drive to babies r us and see what nipples are available.
